Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan previously worked together on the excellent Image Comics book Birthright. While that sometimes got pretty horrifying, it’s more of an epic dark fantasy series. Not so with their follow-up, Dark Ride, which delves immediately and consistently into horror over the course of 12 epic issues.
The short pitch of the book is what if a Walt Disney stand-in made a deal with the devil for a horror-themed amusement park called Devil Land. An extraordinarily popular theme park populated with iconic horror characters, the scares are usually just of the rollercoaster variety. But when a new employee named Owen shows up, things are about to get downright nightmarish, for real.
Endlessly surprising with jaw-droppers every issue, Dark Ride spins out into a complicated intergenerational family tale that does not hold back from shockingly weird turns or letting you know that none of the characters are safe. And Bressan’s art doesn’t hold back from the blood and guts, either… This is now haunted house ride at the carnival, it’s a direct elevator down to the pits of hell on every page.
If you’re a fan of Five Nights at Freddy’s or just a fan of theme parks in general, you’re going to find a lot to love in this book that perfectly melds theme park culture with murderous animatronics, hellish rides, and deep secrets that would scare the severed head off Walt Disney’s frozen corpse.
Dark Ride is collected in three volumes, and the perfect Halloween vacation spot for any horror fan. Just hold on tight and make sure your seatbelts are strapped, because this book is going down in history as one of the best horror books on the stands.
