News From The Fallout is the most uniquely artistic book on the stands. Written by Chris Condon with art by Jeffrey Alan Love, it’s tough to talk about what the Image Comics book is without spoiling the premise, so beware some mild spoilers past this point.
The book starts simply enough, with a nuclear test done by the US Army in Nevada in 1962. As you might expect, it goes very, very wrong, and leaves only one survivor — who runs for cover in a nearby diner.
It becomes clear very quickly that this isn’t just a case of radioactive fallout; those affected by the nuclear test have become something else. And what spirals over the course of the series is like 30 Days of Night set in the desert, instead of snowy Alaska, with all the horrifying monster madness and mass death that implies.
Nothing against Condon, but the real stand-out here is Love’s stunning art. His images are all done in silhouette, which — given the circumstances — calls immediately to mind the shadowy ash blasts that are left of human beings after a nuclear explosion. That in itself is horrifying, but it also leaves a lot to the imagination, playing out like a shadow play versus what one might expect from traditional comic book storytelling.
So if you’re looking for something that will haunt your dreams and feed your artistic needs this Halloween, look no further than News From The Fallout. It’s a blast!
