After the end of Peacemaker Season 2, you’re probably desperate to find out if there’s going to be a Peacemaker Season 3. Has the show been renewed? Canceled? Is this it for the 11th Street Kids??? Well, James Gunn has plans… But they may not be the plans you’re looking for.
Spoilers past this point, but in the last few minutes of the finale, Peacemaker (John Cena) is captured by ARGUS and thrown onto the prison planet of Salvation by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo). The rest of what is now called Checkmate don’t know he’s there, and Peacemaker is left hearing some beastly roars in the distance of what is supposed to be an uninhabited planet. Yikes!
Previously, Gunn had told fans wondering about whether there will be a Season 3 to check back after the finale. And in the episode of the Peacemaker official podcast that streamed right after the finale, Gunn noted that “Full Nelson” is, “Maybe the final episode of Peacemaker, really.”
To be clear tone-wise, he wasn’t joking, nor was he doing a tease — this seemed a sincere declaration. And in fact, late in the episode he revealed that the original ending of the episode was the newly formed Checkmate gang happily walking away from their office space. That is until Gunn told his partner Peter Safran about possibly throwing Peacemaker onto Salvation — they already knew that was a big part of their plans for the DCU — and Safran told Gunn that he had to include the scene.
So with Peacemaker trapped, ARGUS infused with Lex Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) goons, and Checkmate none the wiser, what’s next?
“Peacemaker will be back,” Gunn said, referring to the character, at the end of the podcast. “As [for] this TV show? We’ll see exactly what form. We have plans. But you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU in… Not too long.”
So what is next for the DCU then? When will these characters pop up next?
What’s Next For The DCU, If Not Peacemaker Season 3?
Gunn has also previously said that the Peacemaker Season 2 finale feeds directly into Man of Tomorrow, the sort-of sequel to Superman that stars Lex and Superman (David Corenswet) having to team up against a bigger threat. Is that threat Salvation? Perhaps, but in terms of “not too long,” that won’t hit theaters until July 9, 2027.
Before that, we’ve got Supergirl on June 26, 2026, though that is set in space. And Clayface on September 11, 2026, though that seems to be a relatively standalone body horror movie. Meanwhile, on TV there’s Lanterns, which will premiere in 2026… And while it’s possible we may see some of the Peacemaker characters there, that doesn’t exactly seem to be what Gunn is indicating.
Instead, he’s likely talking about a secret, unannounced DCU TV project. He’s teased this several times, it’s supposed to include Grillo as Flag, and could definitely be either a Checkmate series, or Salvation Run (based on the comic), or something entirely different. On that one though, Gunn has already met with writers and directors — so we may not know what it is, but it’s clear it’s farther along in process than one might expect.
As for Peacemaker Season 3? Right now, there’s a lot of stuff that needs to come first (see above). So when it comes to that cliffhanger, expect it to get resolved somewhere else, and possibly in Man of Tomorrow.
