James Gunn Breaks Down In Tears Describing ‘Peacemaker’ Scene Inspired By His Dad

You wouldn’t expect to be brought to tears by the official Peacemaker podcast, let alone writer/director James Gunn breaking down in sobs that stopped him cold. But thats exactly what happened on this week’s episode where Gunn described a scene in the Season 2 finale inspired by his late father.

In the episode, and spoilers past this point, the 11th Street Kids gather to confront Chris Smith (John Cena), aka Peacemaker, about him leaving them. They basically hold an intervention where he claims he’s the Angel of Death, but one by one they describe why he’s meaningful to them — leading to Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) laying it all out on the line.

Discussing that part of the scene in particular is what brought Gunn to tears.

“But then she say the thing to me that I find the most touching. And… I’m crying,” Gunn said. “The thing I find the most touching in the episode is when she looks at him and she says, ‘You’re big and your dumb, and you’re stupid. But when I’m around you, I know you love me. And you might be the only person in the world that I can say that about.'”

Getting visibly shaken, Gunn continued, “And I’m crying because it’s touching and the way she performs it is touching. I’m also crying because that’s my dad. And… That was the way I felt about him.”

At this, the sobbing Gunn took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes, stopping several times.

“And that’s probably Peacemaker,” Gunn said, his voice breaking. “Goof. You know this buffoonish, imperfect guy, who’s just so generous and so full of love. And I knew my dad loved me. And I’m not sure I was able to say that about anybody else in this world until Jen [Holland] and, you know, recent history. And uh… And that to me is the most touching thing probably ever on the show.”

After gaining his composure, the podcast continued apace. But it’s worth noting that James F. Gunn, who was born on July 11, 1941 and appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, passed away in 2019. And perhaps further compounding this for James Gunn is that the full name of the character Adebayo is Leota Adebayo — and Gunn’s mother is named, you guessed it, Leota. So basically Gunn wrote a scene of his mom talking to his dad, telling him how special he is to her.

Okay, now I’m crying.
