Comixology Originals has big plans for New York Comic Con 2025. The digital publisher has a scavenger hunt, signings, panels, and much more… And it also comes at an interesting time in the industry, as multiple other upstart digital publishers are rising up in the space.
But you know who isn’t worried about that? Jeff DiBartolomeo, GM and CTO of Comixology.
“We believe that competition is good for customers and good for the comics industry,” DiBartolomeo told Comic Book Club over email. “We’re confident that the breadth of our offering with titles from 150+ publishers and our dedicated customer base will allow us to continue to offer great value and selection for customers.”
That’s all well and good, but what is coming from Comixology at the con? To find out more, read on.
Comic Book Club: Going into New York Comic Con with the slew of announcements… What’s the goal here? What do Comixology Originals look like in 2026?
Jeff DiBartolomeo: Yes! Lots of announcements! We continue to be really excited about empowering creators to create – that’s our goal; to be a place where a diverse group of writers and artists can do great work. We have Comixology Originals digital releases scheduled through 2027, and print releases via Dark Horse, Ablaze, and Mad Cave Studios through 2026. There are a ton of projects underway and on-deck.
How has the tech evolved (or not) alongside the creative line?
What we’re most excited about is the Kindle Colorsoft family of devices. The 7” Colorsoft was announced right before NYCC 2024, and we featured it prominently in our SDCC 2025 booth. Customers were impressed with the color display and comics reading experience, and we’re thrilled with the number of customers reading comics on it! And last week, Kindle announced the upcoming Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which has an amazing 11” display that is nearly the size of a print comic book. We’re also continually working to evolve the shopping and discovery experience on Amazon, with feature releases planned through 2026 and beyond.
How do you see the interplay between Comixology Originals and the other properties available through the service? Do you find that someone who reads, say, The Lycan, is clicking over to Werewolf by Night at Marvel?
We think that Comixology Originals’ diverse slate of stories has contributed to the influx of new-to-comics and new-to-digital-comics customers that we’ve previously shared – nearly one third of our customers bought their first digital comic on Amazon in the past 12 months. And once customers get introduced, they explore the other 250,000+ titles in our catalog or follow a recommendation.
The digital comics space is becoming increasingly crowded in 2025, and going into 2026… How do you look at your competitors, and what is Comixology doing to (hopefully) stay ahead of the pack?
We believe that competition is good for customers and good for the comics industry. We’re confident that the breadth of our offering with titles from 150+ publishers and our dedicated customer base will allow us to continue to offer great value and selection for customers.
Let’s talk about New York Comic Con itself: obviously, you’re the same company, but what comes out of the collaboration with Kindle?
Kindle devices have been around for many years and people love them for reading all kinds of books. With the launch of Colorsoft devices, we were thrilled with the number of comics customers were reading right out of the gate. When I pitched the idea of a collaboration for SDCC and now NYCC, the Kindle team was immediately on-board because it’s a natural fit. For Kindle, showing off the Colorsoft to thousands of comics readers is a no-brainer. For Comixology, the Colorsoft offers a unique feature that sets us apart from the other choices in the digital comics space. The reactions we saw from die-hard existing Comixology customers and new-to-digital customers alike was exciting!
I do love that the scavenger hunt takes you to other booths and tables you might not otherwise visit… Clearly, it worked at San Diego, but did you tweak any aspects for New York (other than it being a different con)?
For the most part, it’s the same experience with a different list of participating publishers. The list of participating publishers is naturally different, depending on who is exhibiting at NYCC, but I’m happy that all of the participating SDCC publishers who are also at NYCC are in again because they all enjoyed being a part of it. We also opened it up beyond traditional publishers and included a number of Comixology Originals creators who are tabling in Artist Alley. We’re excited to help drive people to publishers’ booths and creators’ tables, give out free digital comics and Colorsofts, and have a ton of fun!
Anything you, personally, are looking forward to checking out at the con? Or is your schedule too busy to, say, pick up that primo exclusive Funko Pop?
I have a rule that I want to go home after the con with less things than I came with; having said that, we’re based in New York so it’s a lot easier to carry stuff home at the end of the day than San Diego. More importantly, I’m looking forward to catching up and spending time with Comixology Originals creators, friends, and colleagues across the industry – getting face-to-face time is the best part of the con for me. We’re excited about our “neighborhood” in NYCC – right across from DC and Mad Cave.
