BOOM! Studios Grabs ‘Jem And The Holograms’ License

Jem and the Holograms

Here’s some truly outrageous news: BOOM! Studios has snagged the publishing rights to Jem and the Holograms, which was previously held by IDW.

“I was part of the team that brought JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS back to comics in 2015 and saw first-hand the positive impact our stories had on a broad and diverse community of readers,” said Michael Kelly, Publisher of BOOM! Studios. “I could not be happier than to be working with Jerrica, Kimber, Stormer and the rest of the group (yeah, even Pizzazz) once again.”

BOOM! will work with Hasbro to mount a tour (read: make comics) featuring Jem (and the Holograms) starting in 2026. It will kick off early though with, per PR, “a BOOM! Direct Reserve Campaign collecting the historic run of JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS comics launching on Kickstarter this November.”

First launched in 1985, the classic cartoon created by Christy Marx has some comic bonafides… Alongside Hasbro, the original series came from Marvel Productions. The show focused on Jerrica Benton, who used hologram tech to masquerade as Jem, the lead singer of the band. While they’d tour, they’d also tangle with their evil opposite band, The Misfits.

You might be able to do the math here, but this is the 40th anniversary of Jem and the Holograms, and as BOOM! notes alongside this news, The Loyal Subjects has also launched a new line of dolls.

The first Jem comics were released in 2011, followed by an IDW series in 2015, launched with writer Kelly Thompson.
