The latest episode of Peacemaker, “Like A Keith In The Night,” was a climactic one as it not only killed one major character, but it brought another one back to life. Spoilers past this point, but in the episode we watched the Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick) of Earth-X shockingly die, while actor Lochlyn Munro returned as Agent Larry Fitzgibbon from Peacemaker Season 1. Only, as a Nazi.
Nothing against Munro, but let’s start with the simpler, less impactful bit. Last season, Agent Fitzgibbon was working for the Evergreen Police Department when he was taken over by a Butterfly, one of the invasive alien species that was Season 1’s villain. Here, Fitzgibbon is once again a member of the police department, but on Earth-X, the alternate, Nazi dimension we discover this episode veered course when Germany and Hitler won World War II.
He shows up at the Smith household because Peacemaker (John Cena) fought his way out of ARGUS after discovering he was in a Nazi dimension. And then realizing if he’s caught, he’ll tell the police and/or ARGUS about the dimensional portal they’re hiding in the library, Auggie and Peacemaker’s brother Keith (David Denman) killed a whole host of cops tracking Peacemaker and Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) down.

So Agent Fitzgibbon shows up at the house to arrest Peacemaker. Auggie turns him away until he can get a warrant, but when a firefight breaks out, Fitzgibbon storms the house. Whether he’ll be back in the Season 2 finale, and if his partner Sophie Song (Annie Chang) will show up? Well, probably not the latter because again: Nazi dimension. They don’t like non-White people.
So, let’s talk about the bigger plot point.
Auggie Of Earth-X Dies… Right After Revealing He’s Probably Not A Nazi
After talking to Peacemaker and Harcourt — and a very unhelpful John Economos (Steve Agee) — Auggie determines that the best course of action is to send the 11th Street Kids back to their dimension. When Harcourt scoffs that he’s still a Nazi, he defers. He gives a big speech about how maybe they fight all the injustice in their own dimension, but here he’s doing what he can — fighting the madmen and the monsters, even if he can’t take down the bigger issues facing society.
That’s when two Vigilantes (Freddie Stroma) break in and stab him to death. And he does, indeed, die. Peacemaker sobs over him, that his father was (probably) not a Nazi and that ergo, he didn’t deserve to die.

Here’s the thing, though… It’s a nice sentiment, I guess, in the show. But we have a word for people who assisted Nazis, even if they didn’t consider themselves Nazis. They are collaborators. Even if, while watching the show, we’re supposed to think “whoa, I guess he did have it hard and did the best he could,” this Auggie was supporting a racist, sexist, homophobic, and all-around genocidal regime. So apologies to Peacemaker, who just lost his dad again, but even if he didn’t love the swastika, he lived under it. And certainly, as a superhuman representative of the best of society, he is buoying up Nazis. You can either fight a fascist regime, or you support it. There is no in-between.
Will the show explore this idea more? Likely, no. Instead, it’s RIP to Robert Patrick’s character… Again.

Yea we can tell your political leaning in this post. You realize that using your logic, everyone under the North Korean regime is just a sympathizer….. you can’t always fight the system.
My political leaning is “anti-Nazi”?
It’s very convenient to sweep it under the ‘I won’t argue with you, but…’ rug. For all we know, Auggie was running an underground railroad in this universe. Until we get more details it’s a little soon to high-handedly paint him with the collaborator brush.
