‘Peacemaker’ Brings On A Surprise ‘Superman’ Cameo — And Tees Up ‘Man Of Tomorrow’

DAVID CORENSWET as Superman in DC Studios’ and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “SUPERMAN,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

This week’s episode of Peacemaker has been shrouded in secrecy for weeks, and now we know at least part of the reason why. Spoilers for “Ignorance Is Chris” past this point, but we just got a major cameo from Superman: Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult.

In the episode, Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo) is at his wits’ end after Peacemaker (John Cena) escaped the DCU in the previous episode. He’s also lost track of Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), Economos (Seve Agee), and Judomaster (Nhut Le). So he decides to consult with an expert, and to do that he needs to go to Belle Reve prison.

Guess who is being held there after the events of Superman? None other than Lex himself, who is limping, likely after getting tossed around by Krypto at the end of the movie. He’s not particularly inclined to help, particularly as he thinks the metahumans are taking over the world while he’s “here in Belle Reve listening to a bear-sized man with dragon skin butt-f**king a glowing twink with cartoon eyes in a cell beside me every night.”

We won’t spend time figuring out which DC Comics characters that refers to, because the point of the scene is that Flag needs Lex’s help to figure out where Chris went and how, so they can appropriate his dimensional travel device. And as a trade, if Lex can pinpoint the location of the portal, not only will it be an “opportunity for redemption,” but he’s getting transferred to Van Kull, a non-metahuman prison.

While that’s pretty much it for the Lex appearance this episode, it seems like Hoult may not just be a one-and-done for the series, given Lex is now gunning for Peacemaker. And not only that, James Gunn — who wrote and directed this episode — has said that Peacemaker Season 2 feeds directly into the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie. So likely, that all starts here.

One other little detail that seems worth mentioning… During the scene in question, Lex is idly making some drawings with his finger while talking to Flag. Is that just a casual tic, or does the genius villain have something else going on? We’ll have to wait for the final two episodes of the season to find out…
