This week’s episode of Peacemaker revealed a big twist that fans have been waiting for, for weeks. Spoilers past this point, but the reveal that DC2 aka Earth 2 is actually Earth X, a Nazi dimension, wasn’t in writer/director James Gunn’s original treatment at all.
“There was a version that I remember that you were writing… Emilia Harcourt was gonna go deep undercover with some Nazis, and I was gonna have to shave my head,” star Jennifer Holland recalled on this week’s episode of the official Peacemaker podcast.
After a second where you can see the wheels turning in his head, Gunn recalls exactly what happens. Rather than a dimension full of Nazis, the show would have still followed white supremacists — but in the DCU.
“I wrote a whole season treatment for a completely different version that was about like, about the gang of Nazis that Auggie Smith left in his wake, and I just never felt it,” Gunn said. Auggie, by the way, is Robert Patrick’s role, the father of Peacemaker (John Cena) who was killed in Season 1.
“You wrote a first episode, a full first episode, and then you scrapped it,” Holland continued. “You were like, this isn’t it.”
“It has a great action sequence in it that I hope I can use somewhere else,” Gunn said. “But I think I was just writing around the action sequence… It had nothing to do with the two worlds.”
While Gunn seems to imply that the original treatment didn’t have anything to do with the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC) or multiple dimensions, he does add another change that seems to have happened later in the process. “I do know that I was gonna hold off killing Peacemaker 2 ’til later in the season when I first was writing it. And then I’m like, it’s a good ending for the first episode. Get people hooked.”
That said, even with these other iterations, the version we ended up with is the version we got, Nazi dimension at all. And if you’re curious about how and why DC2 is a Nazi dimension? Well, you’ll find out next week.
“We’ll find out next episode everything,” Gunn said, laughing, “and it is crazy, crazy episode.”
