WEBTOON And Disney Are Teaming Up For A New Digital Comics Platform:
Turns out, rolling out Marvel Comics on WEBTOON was just the beginning, as the vertical scrolling comics company and Disney have announced they’re developing a new, standalone digital comics platform.
Per ICv2, and this is somewhat confusing, so hang in there, the platform will be an expansion of the currently existing Marvel Unlimited app, and include all of the comics found there, in addition to WEBTOON Originals — for a total of over 35,000 comics. It will also include both vertical scrolling and regular formatted comics. And while it will be subscription-based, it will be free to Disney+ subscribers.
As part of the deal, Disney will “acquire a 2% equity stake in WEBTOON Entertainment.”
Currently, this new platform is in development, so no debut time has been announced. But it also raises a lot of questions, not least of which is whether Marvel will start publishing WEBTOON comics, and if there will be any sort of indication that MCU properties are based on comic books shared on Disney+. But that’s probably asking too much.
DC Comics Cancels Green Arrow And Birds of Prey:
Things are not looking great for one of DC’s premiere couples, as the publisher has canceled Green Arrow with issue #31, and Birds of Prey with issue #28, both in December.
On both counts, writers Chris Condon and Kelly Thompson took to social media to express their disappointment with the cancellations for their titles, respectively, with Condon saying he’s “fiercely proud of the work – especially this final issue” for Green Arrow, and Thompson stating that, “I’ll do my best to end it well and leave it ready for future BIRDS OF PREY creators and readers.”
While there was some speculation about whether the respective writers chose to end the titles, the actual reason is sales, which, despite both titles being critically acclaimed, were not strong enough to sustain the titles in the long run. And based on further statements by Thompson, at least in her case she felt that DC would have continued if she pushed harder — but instead decided to aim to end strong.
So why these cancellations, now? The dry answer is possibly the close of a financial quarter at the end of the year. But as for speculation, with DC K.O. looking to reshape the DC universe starting in 2026, it’s likely there’s some clearing of the deck going on — and Green Arrow and Birds of Prey were just the first to fall.
Marvel’s Ultimate Endgame Blind Bags To Contain One-Of-A-Kind Sketch Variants:
Blind bags are the “new” hot thing in the comic book industry. And they’re bound to get even hotter (read: sold on Whatnot even earlier) thanks to Marvel’s True Believers Blind Bags for Ultimate Endgame. That’s because the blind bags may contain one-of-a-kind original sketch variant covers from top-tier comic book artists.
Those include Leinil Francis Yu, Peach Momoko, Mark Bagley, Ron Lim, Pepe Larraz, and more, and will come signed by the artist as well as spotlighting Ultimate Universe characters.
On the off-chance you don’t win the lottery, there are an enormous number of other covers coming from the program, which will all be included in the Blind Bags. Ultimate Endgame #1 hits stores on December 31.
