In the Ultimate Universe, Tony Stark created Origin Boxes — devices that brought back the powers and/or tools of the folks The Maker, the evil Reed Richards, had robbed from them. Well, as revealed by Marvel, in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #5, Miles Morales is bringing some of those Origin Boxes back to the main Marvel universe, which is, on the surface, one of the more confusing things to happen in a while.
In Incursion #5, which hits on October 22, per PR from Marvel, it is “ending with Miles Morales’ exciting return to the main Marvel Universe—and he’s not coming home empty handed! Miles will be entrusted by Iron Lad with a handful of ‘Origin Boxes,’ the special devices he used to create the heroes of the Ultimate Universe!”
Continues Marvel, “Containing the catalysts collected by the Maker to rob characters of their destinies, each ORIGIN BOX holds all that’s needed to grant familiar power sets to whoever opens it—from the mighty abilities of legendary super heroes to the deadly skills of the world’s fiercest supervillains! Who will get their hands on these powers, and what abilities will they gain? Find out as ORIGIN BOXES pop up in your favorite titles, starting with MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN #39, also on sale October 22. Scattered across the Marvel Universe throughout 2026, each ORIGIN BOX lays the groundwork for exciting storylines and sees the rise of all-new heroes and villains!”
Okay, so what’s confusing about this is that The Maker traveled back in time to mess up the origins of heroes in the new Ultimate Universe in order to control it. For example, he made it so that Peter Parker never became Spider-Man — so Tony Stark gave an Origin Box to the now thirty-something, married Peter, who was granted a costume and his Spider-Man abilities. The whole idea of these boxes is to give the superhero abilities to the citizens of the Ultimate Universe because they don’t have those powers.
Now they’re in the Marvel Universe where… Those people have those powers? So again for example, Spider-Man could get an Origin Box that gives him Spider-Man powers and a costume, but he already has those.
Obviously, we’ll have to see how this plays out, and it likely means characters you wouldn’t expect to get those powers, or new characters, will get ’em. But on the surface, it’s a weird conceit.
