Back in 1984, The Last Starfighter was released in theaters. Focusing on a kid named Alex Rogan who is so good at video games he gets to go into space and fight to save the galaxy, there was absolutely nothing that I found aspirational about that on any level, as a fellow Alex who was also obsessed with video games. But anyway, more than 40 years later, The Last Starfighter is back – not in pog form, but as a comic book from Mad Cave Studios.
“Greetings, Starfighters! I’m thrilled to be collaborating with the stellar team at Mad Cave and Paul Davidson to elevate Starfighter into the multiverse,” said Jonathan Betuel, who wrote the original movie. “Long overdue, we’re all eager to chronicle the Herculean undertaking of Alex Rogan as he finds himself charged with rebuilding the legendary starfighter legion.”
Betuel, along with producer Paul Davidson, will be leading the team; though the comic itself will be written by Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes, with art by Willi Roberts and colors by Francesco Segala.
“Starfighters, you have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier, alongside Mad Cave Studios!” added Mark Irwin, President of Mad Cave. “We are excited to bring Jonathan’s vision to comic fans everywhere!”
Said Davidson, “The Last Starfighter was and still is a childhood obsession that I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to work on. Jonathan created an iconic story for the ages, and now Mad Cave, Ben & Deric, Willi, and Francesco are the All-Star team helping us bring it to a new generation.”
Mad Cave also teases that this is the beginning of an expanded The Last Starfighter universe, and that the new comic is slated to debut in June of 2026.
