Yesterday (September 4), writer/director James Gunn took to Instagram to tease this week’s episode of Peacemaker Season 2. But he took it one step further, tying into the big news of the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow: turns out the HBO Max show “directly” leads into the 2027 debuting movie.
In the Instagram post, Gunn wrote, “Watch the Man of Tomorrow Prequel AKA #Peacemaker Season 2, airing a new episode tonight on @HBOMax at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST.” Which seems like simply a cheeky way of pivoting off the big news item, and getting people to watch your HBO Max series. It’s also a little silly-sounding, because Peacemaker is coming out first — so it’s not really a prequel, versus potentially Man of Tomorrow is a sequel.
…Except Gunn was serious. Dead serious. Per IGN, when a fan expressed such doubts (copyright Doubt, 2008) since there are other projects coming in between the two, like Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface, Gunn clarified that Peacemaker Season 2 is “directly” setting up Man of Tomorrow.
That’s pretty wild, so what could it mean? There’s a lot of speculation around what cameos will show up in the final three episodes of Peacemaker Season 2, which Gunn has held back from press (and even his PR rep). Theories range from Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña) to, after this week’s episode, June Moone (Cara Delevigne) or other members of 2016’s Suicide Squad (which would be bizarre). But most of that speculation focuses on the events happening in the alternate dimension DC2, which Peacemaker is accessing from his Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC).
While it’s almost definite that other characters from Superman will show up before the season is over — Gunn has already revealed they did a day of shooting for Peacemaker on the Superman set, in addition to the one that saw Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) show up in the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere — there’s a stronger possibility for what Gunn means here… He’s talking about the QUC.
Gunn has also been very clear that the plotline about pocket universes and portals that was introduced in Superman, and the QUC in Peacemaker, are part of the bigger plot of the DCU. So likely, the “directly” set up is however this particular MacGuffin ends up in Peacemaker, it leads into the portal plot in Man of Tomorrow.
We’ll know more when Peacemaker wraps up on October 9 and when Man of Tomorrow debuts on July 9, 2027.
