‘Peacemaker’ Reveals Mighty Crabjoys Are A Universal Constant

If there’s one constant from universe to universe? It’s Mighty Crabjoys, Superman’s (David Corenswet) favorite “punk” band. They were first sneakily seen during a montage on a t-shirt Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour) was wearing in Creature Commandos, and were a semi-major plot point in Superman… And now — spoilers past this point — are not just popular in one dimension, thanks to this week’s episode of Peacemaker, it turns out they’re popular in every dimension.

In the episode, Peacemaker (John Cena) travels to an alternate Earth (which we like to call DC2) where he’s a beloved superhero, with a brother and father who are alive, and an Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) who is clearly in love with him; versus the version in the DCU who has some very specific reasons to not want to date our titular character.

It’s while there that we get our first glimpse of Mighty Crabjoys, thanks to a billboard off what looks like the town square in Evergreen, in the DC2. But that’s just a tease for the full reveal, as Peacemaker heads to the roof where the billboard is, to jump across into the Evergreen DMV and take down the Sons of Liberty, a terrorist group.

In case you can’t read it, the billboard is likely for the local radio station, as it reads, “106.7 Evergreen Rocks!” And then it features the two leads in the front, as well as the two other members in the back of the billboard.

It’s interesting that Mighty Crabjoys seem the same, when so many real bands are different in the DC2. For example, instead of Scorpions, the band in the DC2 is Scorpionz. The Cruel Intentions are The Cruel Interventions, Hanoi Rocks is Hanoi Rocks, Hardcore Superstar is Hardcore Megastars, and Def Leppard is Def Leopard.

Meanwhile, while some of the letters in the band name are blocked by the corner of the building, there’s a crab spray-painted on the wall behind him, so they are likely still Mighty Crabjoys. They are, in a word (or two), a universal constant.

Who Are Mighty Crabjoys? Meet The “Real” Band:

So Mighty Crabjoys might be a real band in the DCU and the DC2, but what about the real world? The answer is: no. Sort of. There is a Mighty Crabjoys song that plays over the end credits of Superman, which was written by James Gunn and Eric Nally, the lead singer of Foxy Shazam — which is featured heavily on the soundtrack for Peacemaker Season 2. The track, titled “The Mighty Crabjoys Theme,” was performed by Lou Lou Safran and Foxy Shazam.

If the name “Safran” seems familiar, that’s because Lou Lou Safran is the daughter of Peter Safran, the co-CEO of DC Studios alongside James Gunn. Lou Lou is also the woman featured front and center on the billboard, and the nepo baby madness doesn’t end there… Mason Gunn, James Gunn’s godson, is the guy right behind Lou Lou, and sticking his tongue out on the poster below. Mason happened to end up in the multiversal band because he was on set that day, and James Gunn was like “hey wanna be in this” and he said “yes.” Lucky!

Meanwhile, they’re backed up by real punk rockers Jordan Daniel and Jake Hairston, who are part of the Atlanta-based band the Rotten Stitches.

Mighty Crabjoys have also crossed media, as they appeared in DC Comics in Batman and Robin #23, as well as a poster glimpsed on Superman’s boyhood bedroom wall, just like in the movie, in Superman Unlimited #2.
