He’s Popeye the Sailor Man, and he’s headed to I Hate Fairyland, as Skottie Young and guest artist Jay Fosgitt will tackle the character in issue #45 of the Image Comics book.
“Jay [Fosgitt] is a great cartoonist and we’re lucky to have him on board with us. I know one of Jay’s favorite characters is Popeye and he can draw the heck out of him! And it just so happens that Popeye entered the Public Domain recently so it seemed fitting,” said Young. “I Hate Fairyland it the perfect book to be able to grab onto things like that run with it because anything can happen in my book!”
In the issue, per PR, “Gert and Larry sail the oceans blue in search of a dastardly sea beast that may hold the key to Gert returning home, but they find themselves outmatched and in need of help… from none other than Popeye the Sailor Man.”
Popeye, which hit the public domain on January 1 of this year, is just the latest “cameo” to appear in the crass fairy tale series. Previous characters include Dorothy and Toto, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse, and if the series keeps running until 2034, likely Superman.
I Hate Fairyland #45 will hit stores on October 15 with covers by Fosgitt and Young. Check them out (including one NSFW one) below.
