Marvel has revealed multiple covers for the October-debuting X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1. And wonder of wonders, it’s 2025 and we’re somehow still doing the brokeback pose!
To give a little context here, Age of Revelation Overture #1 is the issue that kicks off the X-Men line’s tribute to Age of Apocalypse, which turns dirty thirty this year. In the event, Revelation — aka, Doug Ramsey — turns Earth into a mutant paradise, at the expense of all the humans dying. Oops! 10 years later, the X-Men line is taken over by “new” titles, and it all starts in Age of Revelation Overture.
Alongside the issue, presumably having interior pages that tell some sort of story, it will also feature a main cover by Ryan Stegman, and variant covers by Aaron Kuder, Cory Smith, a “Character Variant Cover” by Rickie Yagawa, and the cover in question by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau featuring Psylocke in the Brokeback Pose. It will also be available as a virgin variant cover, because you would have to be a virgin to imagine someone’s spine could twist that way.
If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, the classic pose usually shows a female comic book character in such a way that you can see both her butt and her boobs (or boob, singular) at the same time. It’s anatomically impossible, and furthermore, really hard to fight in. To be clear, Artgerm’s art(germ) is, as always, slick and clean, and this is far from the worst example of the Brokeback seen in comics. It’s just weird that it’s seen this much lambasting from fans and critics, and we’re somehow still getting the same pose on character covers.
