‘Peacemaker’ Burning Question: Does This Man Really Look Like Beaker?

Beaker and Jesse Burt as Reputed Beaker Lookalike in Peacemaker Season 2

The biggest, most burning question out of Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 2, “A Man Is Only As Good As His Bird,” isn’t — spoilers past this point — what’s next for Peacemaker (John Cena) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) in the DC2 alternate Earth, or if ARGUS Agent Langston Fleury (Tim Meadows) really has Bird Blindness. Nope, it’s whether a man in a pharmacy really looks like the Muppet Beaker — and if so, it’s that’s bad or good.

Here’s the situation: my parents went away on a week’s vacation. But that’s the story of how I became the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and not what we’re talking about here in this article. Instead, let’s set up what happens. In the episode, Harcourt is headed to the pharmacy to get bandages and other sundry items after getting in a brawl at Gabriel’s Horn, a biker bar, in the previous episode. She’s approached by a woman who tentatively tries to tell her that if she’s being domestically abused she has options, with Harcourt firing back at her that, “I’m not a f**king mirror… I have my own problems, okay?”

That cringeworthy and borderline unacceptable “comedy” sequence (seriously, let’s not make a joke out of domestic abuse, okay?) past, we bizarrely get, by contrast, what might be the funniest exchange in the episode. It turns out Harcourt was shouting loud enough to draw the attention of the rest of the customers, including one tall, red-haired man played by Jesse Burt, who is credited as “Reputed Beaker Lookalike.”

“You got a good view there, Beaker?” Harcourt sarcastically asks.

“Beaker?” Reputed Beaker Lookalike asks. “Who’s…”

“He’s a Muppet,” answers another customer, credited as “Woman in Aisle” and played by Tanya Freeman.

“Do I look like him?” RBL asks.

“A little,” answers WiA.

“And that’s bad?” RBL asks.

“It’s not good,” answers WiA.

Then Harcourt goes to pick up some Tostitos for a party later, and that’s the long and the short of it. But to return to the main question at hand: does this man look like Beaker? And is that bad?

In case you’re not familiar, Beaker is the long-suffering assistant of Dr. Bunsen Honeydew on various iterations of The Muppets, from The Muppet Show forward. The whole bit is that as part of the Muppet Labs segment of the show, Honeydew will perform a totally safe (wink, wink) experiment that usually results in Beaker getting electrocuted, set on fire, or both at the same time. Unlike the loquacious Honeydew, Beaker only talks in hitch-pitched syllables, saying “Meep” over and over again.

So is it bad to look like Beaker? Certainly, this guy does sort of look like Beaker in that he has red hair, a long neck, and his tan coat is similar to Beaker’s lab coat. He doesn’t have bulging eyes, and can talk like a normal human being. It’s probably not great to look like a Muppet in general, as they are — spoiler — felt puppets. And Beaker is also one of the weirder ones with human glove hands, so that he can help manipulate the equipment during experiments.

But it’s not bad on the surface to be Beaker, as he is an extremely popular Muppet who everyone loves. So that’s good! The downside is that RBL exists in the DCU, and there are plenty of bald scientists — see Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) in Superman — eager and willing to experiment on anyone and everyone. Meaning a guy who looks like Beaker might be in serious trouble.

Long story short? Looking like Beaker isn’t great, being compared to Beaker is great, but being a Beaker in a universe of calamitous experiments? Might be time to dye that hair, buddy. The Just for Men is in aisle five.
