Frank Miller Reunites With Todd McFarlane For First Time In 30 Years For New Spawn Cover

Frank Miller continues to have a wild year, after the reveal that he’s writing and drawing a new Dark Knight Returns Batman/Old Man Logan Wolverine story in Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman #1. Over 30 years after the last time they worked together, Miller and Todd McFarlane are collaborating on a new Spawn Universe cover, for this September’s The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #3.

Not only is this the first time Miller and McFarlane have worked together since — get this — the cover art to 1994’s Wizard Magazine #32 (see below), but it’s also the first time the two have ever collaborated on a cover set in the Spawn Universe, despite Miller and McFarlane having worked together on the main Spawn series, as well as 1994’s Spawn/Batman crossover.

Per PR from Image Comics, the last time Miller worked on Spawn was in 2000, with his cover for Spawn #100. The new variant cover features colors by Alex Sinclair, alongside pencils and inks by Miller. However, there’s also a 1:25 incentive black and white variant where McFarlane re-inked Miller’s pencils.

“One of the great pleasures of being in the comic book industry is getting the chance to collaborate with friends of ours. That is always fun. And when that friend is also the insanely gifted Frank Miller, well, it just makes that fun multiply,” said McFarlane via press release. “Frank has made an historic mark on our industry and to be able to work with him once again after decades… I feel like a giddy kid again. And for those who haven’t yet had the chance to read an issue of The Curse of Sherlee Johnson, I think you are missing a uniquely wicked comic book experience from Daniel and Jonathan.”

Added Miller, “Todd and I got into comics for the exact same reason: the sheer joy of making them. Every once in a while, we get to do it together. We’re like a couple of kids.”

The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #3 will also feature covers by Jonathan Glapion and Daniel Henriques, the main team behind the book. You can check out the covers below, as well as — because why not — the cover to Wizard Magazine #32.

The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #3 will hit comic book shops on Wednesday, September 17.
