Marvel Zombies is shambling to your TV screen quicker than expected: the four-episode animated miniseries will now debut on Disney+ on September 24, in full, instead of a week and a half later on October 3.
The spinoff from What If…? takes place in a world, per the title, taken over by carnivorous Marvel superheroes and villains, and follows the few heroes left who are trying to save it. It will be animated in the same style as the three seasons of What If..?, and like the previous program, feature an array of voices from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Those include: Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch), Randall Park (Jimmy Woo), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova/White Widow), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop/Hawkeye), Dominique Thorne (Riri Williams/Ironheart), Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel), and Todd Williams in a TBA role.
While it’s not out of the ordinary for Disney+ to drop all four episodes of an animated series in one day — they’re doing the same earlier in the month for LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past — this is just the latest Marvel series with a, shall we say, strange schedule. While Daredevil: Born Again was close to a weekly schedule, with two double-episode weeks, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man released two-three-three-two, Ironheart came out in two chunks of three, and Eyes of Wakanda released all four episodes in one day, earlier this month.
Even more curious, Ironheart seemed to be heading for a September 3 release after sitting on a shelf for several years, only to be dropped in June. Meanwhile, Eyes of Wakanda was scheduled for August 6, then August 27, before getting abruptly pushed up to August 1 with about a week’s notice. Marvel Zombies isn’t exactly getting the Eyes of Wakanda treatment, but an October 3 release has been in the cards for a while.
Why the shifts? It likely has less to do with Marvel’s tenuous place in culture than ongoing changes with Disney+, which will become the sole Disney app once Hulu goes away sometime next year. Still, it’s a surprising change, particularly for a show that seems primed for spooky season. Instead, Marvel Zombies will premiere on a random Wednesday in September.
