In a series announcement that might make you invoke the immortal words of Ivan Drago — “if he dies, he dies” — Captain America is traveling back in time to save the good ol’ US of A in the new Marvel series 1776.
Written by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill, the five-issue series will debut as part of Marvel’s ongoing celebrations of the 250th anniversary of America next year, which also include a variant cover of various Marvel heroes trying to murder Paul Revere.
Here’s the official synopsis for the series, per Popverse:
Calamity strikes when a mysterious force dares to tamper with the sacred threads of history. CAPTAIN AMERICA and his formidable squad of Marvel heroes leap into action! Their mission? To safeguard the founding of the United States of America! The fate of the nation hangs in the balance at the dawn of the Revolution, as these valiant heroes must navigate the treacherous waters of the past to ensure a future that remains untarnished.
As AIPT notes, this is far from the first time Marvel has sent heroes back to the Revolutionary War period. Previous misadventures at the dawn of America include 1976’s Captain America: Bicentennial Battles, which teamed up Cap with Ben Franklin, presumably to take down a killer kite. And Giant-Size Fantastic Four #2, where Skrulls pretended to be Thomas Jefferson. Does that explain the whole being a “rapist and slave owner” thing? I haven’t read the issue, but I’m guessing they may have avoided that particular topic.
Anyway, 1776 #1 hits stores on November 5, 2025, and you can cross your fingers that the bad guys win this one.
