With ‘Daryl Dixon’ Ending, What Is The Future Of ‘The Walking Dead’?

The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon

With the news out of San Diego Comic-Con that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is ending with Season 4, it’s time for an old question to shamble back to life: Is that it for The Walking Dead?

…and honestly, it’s the same question viewers have been asking pretty much since the original series debuted in 2010. But alongside 11 seasons for The Walking Dead, eight for spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, and a second life for the main TWD cast in Dead City, Daryl Dixon, and The Ones Who Live — not to mention World Beyond, Tales of the Walking Dead, and multiple digital series… There’s been a lot more life in The Walking Dead than any detractors, and perhaps many fans expected.

But, once again, as we regularly do… We’re entering a weird point in the life of the franchise. Daryl Dixon is premiering its third season this September, and then wrapping up with an eight-episode final season, likely to debut in 2026. Meanwhile, Dead City has been picked up for a third season with a new showrunner, which should also debut in 2026. But beyond that is TBD.

The Ones Who Live was a show long in development, originally planned as a trilogy of theatrical movies focusing on Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), and over the course of the one season, that story is pretty much done and wrapped up neatly. More Tales From The Walking Dead, a sequel anthology series, was ordered in 2023, but we haven’t heard much since.

Not that a potential 16 episodes of Walking Dead spinoffs in 2026 (if Dead City runs 8 episodes, as it did in Season 2) is anything to sniff at, but it’s a far cry from the halcyon days of TWD nearly every week of the year. And it is worth mentioning that, like most entertainment companies, AMC is in a very different place both in terms of broadcast and streaming strategies than it was even a year ago, let alone a decade and a half when TWD originally launched.

So is this it for The Walking Dead? Will Daryl Dixon end, Dead City finish out Season 3, and then that’s it forever?

…Er, probably not. If there’s any major clue, it’s this one via a press release from AMC. In it, while announcing the end of Daryl Dixon, star Norman Reedus says, “This finale isn’t just an ending; it’s a celebration of what we’ve all shared together. Keep carrying that love forward – Daryl’s journey is far from over.”

While it’s entirely possible that Reedus is saying there are another 14 episodes of Daryl Dixon to watch over two years, it’s far more likely he’s talking about plans for another series, after Daryl Dixon wraps up. While the overall strategy may shift from miniseries focusing on duos of characters, as it has for the past few years, The Walking Dead at this point is a machine. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people employed by the franchise, and furthermore, the more TWD they make, the more valuable every part of the property becomes. When new seasons debut on Netflix they regularly hop to the top of the charts. Products still pack the shelves, and conventions dedicated to Walking Dead dot the globe.

It’s far more likely that with the changes in the entertainment industry, and the 15th anniversary coming up, there’s going to be an announcement of what’s next — likely looking forward to 2026 or 2027. Could it be a reunion of the original cast, now that Rick is back home? Something fresh and new? Or possibly more miniseries in the mode of Daryl Dixon and Dead City? Whatever it is, like any good zombie, The Walking Dead is never really down for the count.
