Dean and Sam will carry on, my wayward sons, as Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products have announced a brand-new Supernatural comic book series is debuting this October.
Written by Greg Pak with art by Eder Messias, the comic will depict previously unseen adventures of the Winchester brothers that take place between the episodes of the insanely long-running CW series.
“A couple of dudes in a cool car chasing monsters, demons, and ghosts?” said Pak via press release. “Tongue-in-cheek, but deeply-felt emotional story of sibling rivalry and family tragedy? Hugely fun, anti-authoritarian heroes and vibes? Look, I was hooked with the ghosts, but I’m all in. Fans of Supernatural know the show is a blast and it’s an enormous pleasure and privilege to be able to dig into this wild world, especially with Eder Messias. We’re going for fun and grounded, and then we’re going to absolutely cut loose when the time comes. I can’t wait to show more, and thanks so much to everyone for coming along for the ride!”
Added Messias, “When I received the invitation to work on the Supernatural comic book series, I almost fell out of my chair! It is by far my favorite television series. Here in Brazil, on Saturday nights, they would show four episodes in a row. After that, we would spend the week talking to friends about the next episodes. I’m looking forward to bringing this story to fans and giving it my best!”
Back in 2008, Wildstorm (under DC Comics) published a series of in-continuity miniseries tying into Supernatural: Origins, Rising Son, Beginning’s End, and Caledonia. After those early experiments, it seems that was it for Supernatural in comics — until Dynamite came into the picture.
“Warner Brothers was not looking to license Supernatural out as there’s no event around it, as the last comic series I believe ended in 2012,” Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci explained over email. “But we politely pushed as we really wanted it, and over the course of the last two years, and some pitches, Warner Brothers felt like we had the right team to move it forward, which is very exciting!”
And now, Supernatural #1 will hit stores in October. In the new series, “the monster hunters will hear of a series of mysterious fires haunting a decaying rust belt town. When a local factory burns down, followed by several employees going up in flames, and the CEO is suspiciously well-prepared, it’s up to Dean and Sam to figure out what’s going on and set it straight!”
Supernatural #1 features covers from Clayton Crain, David Cousens, and Messias, as well as a photo cover from the show featuring stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. Check ’em out below:
