In case you’ve been living under a rock, you might not be aware that Diamond Comics Distributors hasn’t just gone bankrupt, they’re also essentially holding inventory from publishers like Dynamite hostage, selling it off to pay off their debts while not allowing those publishers access to their own books. In light of that, and with The Boys spinoff Gen V about to debut Season 2 on September 17, Dynamite is taking matters into their own hands and rushing a more expensive reprint of the out-of-print The Boys omnibuses, so retailers will have them in time for the new season of the Prime Video show.
“It’s a little bittersweet, but we’re doing what is best for the retailers and fans in a bad situation,” Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite said in a letter provided to press. “As many know, we’re in a situation where Diamond is holding our inventory, and we do not have access to it. We have no ability to sell the books to comic stores, or to bookstores. It’s a huge drain on us financially, and we were hoping to have our inventory by now to start fulfilling all orders, but that has not happened, and we have to fight for it. That’s part of the situation we’re in.
“With Gen V Season 2 hitting September 17th, we want to give retailers The Boys to sell to fans. Normally, if we were sold out, we would be going back to press overseas as the costs are lower, but to get these into retailer hands in time, we’re going to press in North America. This will allow retailers to order the books and have them in time for the TV series. It cuts our margins incredibly to print in North America, and we are at risk and have to be careful in overprinting, but we have to do what is best for the retailers and fans.”
Continued Barrucci, “These are all first world problems. We’re fortunate that we have the ability to do this.”
Consequently, while all six omnibus editions of the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson series are solicited for an October 1 release, Dynamite is aiming to get books in stores before September 17… Which means the FOC (Final Order Cutoff) for the new editions is this weekend. They are available for reorders through Lunar Distribution, Universal Distribution, Diamond UK. Going forward, they’ll also be available through Simon & Schuster, though given the quick turnaround it doesn’t seem you’ll be able to order through there to make the early September release date.
