Way back in May of 2024, Marvel EIC C.B. Cebulski appeared at Osaka Comic Con and teased that Young Avengers would be coming back to Marvel. But in November, editor Tom Brevoort shut that down, calling the news “wildly misinterpreted and exaggerated.” Well, to paraphrase Mark Twain, it seems the reports of the Young Avengers weren’t so exaggerated after all, as current Supergirl writer and artist Sophie Campbell has revealed she worked on a relaunch last year.
“I worked on a Young Avengers relaunch last year before they pulled the plug on it,” Campbell wrote on BlueSky.
That’s pretty much the long and short of it, as Campbell has yet to elaborate further. But it lines up with what Cebulski teased over a year ago, when he explained that, “The Young Avengers will be reuniting in 2025 from Marvel Comics… There have been two Young Avengers teams but now we are deciding which characters for natural story reasons are going to join the new Young Avengers… Kate-Hawkeye, Patriot, Hulkling, Wiccan… Who’s going to join? 2025!”
As for Brevoort, he said in November on his newsletter that, “While the characters will continue to show up where relevant—Patriot is going to play a part in the upcoming SAM WILSON, CAPTAIN AMERICA project, and Wiccan and Hulkling are still floating around the periphery of a bunch of space stuff, there isn’t any plan at the moment for a new YOUNG AVENGERS series. Now, that could change at any time, assuming that C.B. and Wil Moss and the Avengers editorial office feel that they’ve got a creator or a story or a moment where doing such a thing could be successful. But so far, it’s not in any of the plans that I’ve heard.”
So to give the storied editor credit, he may have just not heard about these plans? Perhaps? Regardless, to speculate wildly, it seemed to make total sense back in May of 2024, that Marvel Comics would be publishing a Young Avengers book to line up with the steadily building plans for a Young Avengers team-up in the MCU. But given that the MCU is very much in flux in terms of its future, with no announced Young Avengers series — or even a clear sense whether the team will show up at all — those sort of loose tie-in plans a la Marvel’s new New Avengers series timed out to the movie Thunderbolts* may have been shelved for the moment.
Will we see Young Avengers at some point in the future? Fingers crossed. But given Campbell is tearing it up on Supergirl for DC, it’s an open question whether she’d even be available to pick up the plans.
