Si Spurrier Leaving ‘The Flash’ With Issue #25

Si Spurrier may or may not be the fastest writer alive, but he definitely won’t be writing the fastest man alive anymore. The creator has announced he’s leaving DC Comics’ The Flash with issue #25.

“I made this decision alone, without pressure or incentive, for reasons I’ll come to in a moment,” Spurrier wrote in a note on his website yesterday (July 14). “Despite the creative number-crunching of a few bad faith naysayers, I’m told sales have been remarkably healthy. Against a backdrop of industry-wide alarm we’ve enjoyed a far slower attrition than is standard, and on a few occasions have even bucked the trend by adding readers midway through our arcs. We’re not topping the charts, that’s true, but we’re a long way from the Rancor Pit trapdoor of financial cancellation.”

Over the course of his run, which Spurrier details extensively in the post, he’s made some wild swings with the story of the speedster. There’s been cosmic horror, multiple Wally Wests, a family vacation to forgotten realms, and a whole lot more. It’s been weird and fascinating, and accompanied by some excellent art from Mike Deodato Jr. (to kick off the run) and others. And while his run (no pun intended) will span a hefty 25 issues, he never thought it would go that long.

“Candidly, I never expected to stay past 12 issues,” Spurrier continued. “I had some ideas for a second year but never seriously expected them to get their chance. I’d taken a massive swing in my pitch – from conventional spandex to unnerving existential horror – and although I knew it would be awesome I didn’t imagine it would outrun the standard expectation for a Return To Basics for very long. That old, inescapable gravity of the status quo. I was delightfully wrong about that.”

Spurrier’s final issue, The Flash #25, hits stores on September 24, 2025. As to whether the title will continue beyond Spurrier is TBA, as DC’s October solicits haven’t hit quite yet. You can check out the synopsis for the final issue, below:

With the Earth plunging into total darkness, all seems lost as Eclipso has turned the moon into his engine of despair. But Jai West and one of the Flash copies have a last-ditch plan in mind — that involves the West family dog? It all comes down to this explosive final chapter of “Bad Moon Rising”!
