This is Comic Book Club News for October 30, 2024.

Oni Press to publish Patrick Horvath’s Free For All:

Oni Press will publish Patrick Horvath’s Free for All as a 56-page one-shot next year. However, that’s not all, as the publisher is also teasing four additional “top secret” projects for 2025.

The project was originally self-published years ago, then funded through a campaign on Zoop. And now it’ll get a bookstore edition from Oni. But what, you may ask, is it about? Great question. It takes place in the future where billionaires can donate half their wealth, or fight to the death to keep it all. And in the middle of one of these death matches, a pair of exes come face to face.

Free For All will hit stores in March, but Oni is also teasing four other secret projects. What are they? Only time will tell.

Greg Capullo Sparks Comic Book Work Ethic Debate:

The latest tempest in a teapot for the comic book industry? Greg Capullo’s statement on work ethic.

Late last week, Capullo announced on X (formerly Twitter) that, “Heads up, gang! FCO has quit Wolverine before its completion. Deadline pressures aren’t for everyone. I’m certain that we’ll find a suitable replacement that will give you the highest quality product possible. Ever onward.”

FCO is the colorist on the book, by the way. And the book is Wolverine: Revenge. Capullo later deleted the tweet, but followed it up with, “I can’t stress this enough to would-be comic creators. Unless you’re willing to forego friends and hobbies and accept sometimes strenuous deadline pressure, this biz ain’t for you. I’ve been known to work 12-16 hours a day 7 days a week for weeks on end. It’s not easy. At times, it’s unhealthy! Choose wisely.”

Naturally, that sparked a big debate on work ethic, with the majority of creators coming down on this being generally bad advice. However, Capullo later clarified that he was mostly talking about himself and how he was raised.

However, Ben Templesmith had an alternate take: “Don’t think this is advice at all. Greg is bang in the money how it is. It’s more a warning. I wish it wasn’t this way, but it’s the reality for many, many creators.”

So is the comic book industry generally bad for creators and their health? I guess we only have nearly a hundred years of evidence to back that up.

Oni Press Teases Another Book:

And in a quick follow-up to our previous story, while I was writing today’s episode Oni Press sent over a teaser for one of their mystery books. Hailing from the creative team of Michael W. Conrad & Dave Chisholm, the teaser depicts a man split with a haunting house, with the tagline, “Houses aren’t the only things that are haunted.”

Other than the book hitting in April of 2025, there’s no more info offered. However, Chisholm has long been associated with the intersection of music and comics, so it will be interesting to see if that continues here.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And Oni Press will keep teasing comic books until morale improves.
