The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are heroes in a half-shell. And now, they’re best-sellers for IDW, as the publisher has shared that the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 has received a massive 300,000 orders, ahead of its July 24 debut date. While comic book sales numbers generally aren’t shared by publishers, this still easily makes it one of the biggest, if not the biggest launches of the year.
“Thank you to all the retailers and fans out there for believing in what we’re cooking up with this new series and for supporting the book in such a massive way,” said writer Jason Aaron via press release provided to Comic Book Club. “There are so many cool covers to choose from, and this summer there’ll be loads of pizza parties and big events all over the country revolving around this launch and the 40th anniversary of the Ninja Turtles. But at the end of the day, I’m mostly just excited for people to hold the book in their hands and see Joëlle‘s incredible art and read the beginning of what should be a crazy fun ride of a story.”
The new series, written by Aaron, finds a rotating team of artists tackling each of the turtles in the first four issues. Joëlle Jones takes on Raphael in the first issue, which finds the hero locked in prison for unknown reasons. Issue #2 brings on Michelangelo, from artist Rafael Albuquerque, issue #3 Leonardo from Cliff Chiang, and issue #4 focuses on Donatello, by artist Chris Burnham.
“From the comic book creatives to IDW staff and our friends at Paramount, everyone working on this series has truly gone above and beyond to make sure it’s an epic and compelling tale that adds to the incredible legacy of the characters that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created 40 years ago,” added IDW publisher Mark Doyle. “The whole team deserves this success and we couldn’t be more grateful for the stunning amount of support we’re getting from both fans and retailers. The first issue will hit stores on July 24, 2024, and chances are, there should be a copy available for you to snag. Since, you know, there’s 300,000 of them.
