Marvel Celebrates The 50th Anniversary Of Deathlok With A New Special:

Marvel’s Deathlok turns 50 this year, and honestly, he doesn’t look a day over… Actually, he’s not looking too good. But the cyborg warrior was first introduced in 1974’s Astonishing Tales #25, and now he’ll be celebrated with a one-shot special written by Christopher Priest and Justina Ireland.

Said Ireland via press release provided to Comic Book Club: “I’m always excited and humbled to write anything in the Marvel universe, but Deathlok as a character is especially important to me because as a U.S. Army veteran, his origin story really resonates in a horrifying way. So I’m excited to dig into the emotional core of what makes Deathlok so unique, while also having some fun.”

What Ireland is referring to is that she enlisted in the military at age 19, and at least as of 2018 was still working for the U.S. Navy as a director of logistics and weapon systems support. So she knows her way around soldiers, is the point.

While Marvel’s press release was slim on story details, the issue will find Deathlok jumping through time, per his usual MO, and will feature art by Dale Eaglesham, Matthew Waite, Luke Ross, and Denys Cowan, the latter of whom is the artist most associated with Deathlok. It will also feature a variant cover by Frank Miller.

DEATHLOK 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 will hit stores on September 18.

YouTuber Comicstorian, AKA Ben Potter, Dies At Age 40:

On a more serious note, Ben Potter, the YouTuber known as Comicstorian, has died of what is being called an “unfortunate accident” at age 40. The news was revealed by his wife Nathalie Potter on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

In the post, she revealed that he passed away on June 8, the same day his final video “Why DC’s Reboots Beats Marvel” was posted on YouTube, and after a mourning period, she plans on continuing his channel – and legacy.

Unlike the Gamergate YouTube troll channels that often dominate conversation, Comicstorian was categorized by a positive outlook and per the name of the channel, frequent deep dives into comic book lore — and the channel grew to over 3 million subscribers. As news of his death hit the internet, YouTubers and comic book icons all came out to mourn the loss of Potter, including kind words from Tom King, Scott Snyder, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and many more.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Rick & Morty Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Oni Press Special:

And back to anniversaries in a bit of tonal whiplash, Rick & Morty celebrates 10 years this year — so Oni Press is celebrating with a one-shot special appropriately titled RICK AND MORTY: 10th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1.

Written by Alex Firer with art by Fred C. Stresing, the issue finds Rick ready to hang up his lab coat and retire, but first he has to clean out his garage. Said Firer on the plot:  “I know you’re all worried it will all go according to plan, but I can’t lie to the fans, the most noble people on Earth, you deserve the truth! Things get out of hand!!!”

The special hits stores on July 10, 2024.
