‘Lanterns’: Yellow Lantern Fans, Something May Be Coming In The Finale

ulrich thomsen on lanterns episode 7

Pretty much since Lanterns debuted on HBO, DC Comics fans have been speculating wildly about theories involving the color yellow. Why? Because the color started as a weakness for Green Lanterns, and eventually became the color of Sinestro’s (Ulrich Thomsen) own Corps, powered by fear. And hey, guess what? There may be something coming in the finale.

This news comes from the after-show podcast for this week’s episode of Lanterns, “The Jordan Boys Legacy,” where writer Tom King was asked about incorporating — or not — the yellow weakness in the show.

“That’s an excellent example of what we did in the room,” King said. “Because if you read the comics that’s not true anymore, that’s not been true for 20 years. Geoff Johns did that with the Parallax story, right? And so it seems like we didn’t talk about maybe the yellowness of it, although it does come up later in this thing.”

Did you catch that last bit? There’s not a whole lot more “later in this thing” other than next week’s season finale of Lanterns, so if there is anything for Yellow Lantern fans, or yellow as a weakness, it would be there. Given — spoilers — Sinestro has returned in this week’s episode, and is talking about embracing fear in the preview for the finale, there may be something there. It’s also possible this may tie in some way to the fact that John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) can maintain constructs without the ring. Could it be possible that John forges his own yellow ring with the help of Sinestro? Or something similar?

We’ll find out next week, but in the meantime, feel free to speculate wildly, as you have been doing from checking the color of the opening credits forward. And here’s the rest of what King had to say about the color yellow:

“But yellow is symbolic for fear, and that’s what it is in the comics. And Sinestro’s yellow ring is a mastery of fear. And if you look at this show, sort of the weaknesses that run through, especially in this episode is this fear to communicate, fear to do that. And that is a weakness in them. That is a weakness that affects John. It’s a weakness that drives Hal to make the mistakes he makes, is that sort of letting in a little bit of fear. So that yellow being a weakness, yeah, it’s not literally the color yellow, but that’s from the comics, and that’s in this show.”
