What does Paramount-Warner Bros mean for DC Comics?

Dog Man turns 70!

This is Comic Book Club News for September 24, 2026.

Ignition Press Joins Midnight Universe Launch:

Midnight madness has grabbed the comic book industry, as another title is joining the October 7 midnight launch of Marvel’s Midnight Universe. Midnight.

Per ICv2, the upcoming Dinner Date #1 by Joanne Starer and Khary Randolph will hit comic book stores as part of the midnight sale, adding a little dating horror to the already horror infused comic book releases as it features two women who spark up a relationship, with the twist that one of them is a reluctant vampire.

The Ignition Press book joins Marvel’s three Midnight Universe titles, as well as Oni Press’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch #1, a new printing of Archie #1, and Rob Liefeld’s Avengelyne #1 from Image Comics. And technically the shops could just put the rest of what’s available that Wednesday on sale at the same time, but I don’t want to spoil the fun.

What Does The Paramount And Warner Bros. Merger Mean For DC Comics?

Earlier this week, Paramount essentially closed the deal in terms of buying Warner Bros. Discovery. While there are still a few more steps to go, it seems like a foregone conclusion that the merger will happen, which raises a question that’s been asked before on this very podcast: what does this mean for DC Comics?

The answer, still, is: we don’t know; with a strong side of probably nothing for now.

As usual, journalist Heidi MacDonald has a good rundown of all this, alongside a longer look at our current entertainment and media apocalypse. But the short version is while the merger is bad and will likely lead to a slew of layoffs due to “redundancies,” there’s nothing really in Paramount’s portfolio that matches DC Comics. And in addition, DC has been profitable, thanks to the success of the Absolute Universe line, Compact Comics, and more. Which is all good!

…Except, to add some additional commentary here, comics divisions like DC and Marvel have flown under the radar because they are small, don’t make much money, and have more worth as idea generation machines. Once a division starts to gain steam, people up the chain like to get involved because it looks good for them. So will that happen once Paramount takes over? Will Batman end up on the starship Enterprise? Will The Flash outrun Tom Cruise in a new Mission: Impossible? We’ll have to wait and see.

Dog Man Turns 70:

Dav Pilkey’s all-ages hit Dog Man is celebrating 70 years… In dog years. Because the series actually first came out ten years ago, in 2016.

Per The Beat, Scholastic will be celebrating the milestone in style with the release of Dog Man Dynamite, an interactive, 48-page book being released on August 3, 2027 featuring games, puzzles, and 3-D glasses. Before that, Pilkey will be touring 10 cities in November and December in support of Dog Man: A Sprinkle In Time, the fifteenth book in the series which hits stores on November 3.

And Scholastic will also support the release with “Bark to School” events that can be hosted in your own city, though Pilkey likely won’t be there.

So happy birthday, Dog Man!

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And the average lifespan of a dog is 10-13 years, though he does have the body of a cop so I guess we’ll see what happens.
