Miracleman Makes Marvel Comics Debut:
After years of teasing, Miracleman — originally named Marvelman, and created by Mick Anglo in 1954 — has joined the Marvel Comics Universe.
Spoilers past this point, but in Avengers: Armageddon #4, David Colton reveals the powers he received from an Origin Box from the Ultimate Universe come from Miracleman. And then he turns into Miracleman.
What does this all mean, exactly? Hard to say, as Miracleman is a character best known — if at all — to modern audiences as a riff on Superman and Captain Marvel (DC Comics version) who took over the world in stories by Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman. Those stories have been reprinted and continued by Marvel in the modern era, but as to what this deconstructed superhero take has to do with the main Marvel Comics is TBD.
However, if you’re wondering what’s next? Per Marvel, writer Chip Zdarsky has “BIG plans for him that will affect not just the Avengers, but the entire Marvel Universe. This is the beginning of something really special.”
Avengers: Armageddon #5 concludes in October, followed by the debut of a new Avengers title in November.
Sabrina The Teenage Witch Meets Vampirella In New Series:
Witches and vampires, oh my! Archie Comics and Dynamite are crossing over once again with Sabrina the Teenage Witch X Vampirella, a new series written by Tini Howard with art by Bill Galvan and Ben Galvan.
So how do these two icons meet? Desperate for a summer vacation, Sabrina’s aunts demand that she house sit, so she ends up in an “idyllic beachside town” where she’s trying to hide her magic from nosy neighbors, but one of those neighbors is none other than Vampirella. And the Daughter of Drakulon needs Sabrina’s help.
Sabrina and Vampirella actually sort of crossed over earlier this year, as both characters appeared in DC’s DC K.O.: Boss Battle #1. However, the first issue of this official crossover will debut this November.
Marvel Masterworks Returns:
The beloved Marvel Masterworks line is back, but this time from Clover Press.
A more high-end collection of classic comics, the line had been put on hold by Marvel, and then officially announced as renewed by Clover Press back at San Diego Comic-Con. And now, the publisher has launched a Kickstarter for the first four volumes of the revised series.
While the new Marvel Masterworks will continue the same gold emblazoned design the line has sported for decades, it will also come in a new cover design as an option through the crowd-funding campaign.
The first four volumes being released by Clover are: Uncanny X-Men Volume 18, collecting the beginning of Chris Claremont and Jim Lee’s run in 1989-1990; Super-Villain Team-Up Volume 1, including comics from 1975 through 1980; The Mighty Thor Volume 25, including a good chunk of Walt Simonson’s run; and The Tomb of Dracula Volume 6, collecting 14 issues of that book.
As of this recording, the campaign has already snagged $150,000 on a $10,000 goal, and is open until October 16.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And for a second I thought they had introduced Miracle Whip into Marvel, but alas.
