10 Best-Selling Comics September 8-14: Spawn ’77 Beats Batman

Does Todd McFarlane have any other ideas that have been sitting around for nearly 50 years? Because if so, he may want to pull them out of the closet: Spawn ’77 #1, which brings back his “original” design for the characters, was a shocking number one best-seller in comic book stores for the week that was.

Part of it might be Mark Spears on art (and covers), and you should never underestimate that dude’s comic store game. But at the same time, we’re talking actual sales here to actual customers, so it’s not merely a case of stores ordering for high-end variants. In any case, a surprise win for Image, and they took the number three slot as well for Skybound’s Transformers #36. Image, of note, got 65 slots on the Top 400, total.

At number two was DC, with the latest part of the Bad Seeds crossover debuting extremely solidly, alongside three more Gotham City books — and Firestorm which hit number eight. It was a rare week with no Absolute Universe books, so expect next week’s chart to look different. DC snagged 126 slots on the Top 400, up a little from last week.

Marvel had an okay showing in the Top 10 with three titles including Punisher and Doomquest, and 123 slots total.

As for other publishers, Dark Horse hit number 19 for Six of Us #1 on the strength of the reteam for Tom King and Gabrial Walta. IDW wasn’t far behind with Sonic X Godzilla #2 at number 21, and BOOM! continues to have a hit on its hands with these new Hellraiser one-shots (they’ve announced ongoing series to follow), as Hellraiser Resurrections – The Onanistic Ritual #1 came in at 22.

*Sales charts are based on data from Prana Direct Market Solutions, which culls together POS (Point of Sale) data from 600+ comic book stores that use the Manage Comics and Comic Shop Assistant systems. That means direct sales to 80,000+ customers, versus orders from comic book stores. But it also means this is a representative sample, and not complete data nor does it contain actual sales figures. Short version, it’s a good reference point, but actual sales data may vary.
