Marvel’s Dan Buckley Speaks At New York Comic Con:
As we get closer to New York Comic Con, all eyes will be on Marvel, a publisher very much in transition. While San Diego saw the passing of the torch from outgoing EIC C.B. Cebulski to incoming EIC Steve Wacker, New York is the first time we’ll get to see what changes Wacker has in store.
…But that’s not the only big change happening at Marvel: Dan Buckley, the frequently controversial former President and Publisher, now titled Head of Marvel Comics & Franchise, is also leaving the company next year, after helping shepherd the new Midnight Universe line of books. But before he exits, he’ll be sitting down at New York Comic Con for a one on one interview.
Presented as part of ICv2’s Insider Talks, Buckley will sit down with The Beat’s Heidi MacDonald from 4pm to 4:30pm on the Thursday of the con at the extremely hard to find River Pavillion to talk the Future of Comics. And while the focus is on comics as a whole, it’s hard not to include Marvel’s unsteady future in that talk. It might be too early to consider this the panel of the con, but it’s certainly one to seek out.
ICON Festival Launches In LA:
Add another comic convention to the pile, but this one has a twist: the ICON Festival of Comic & Narrative Art will be held this November in the Biltmore in Los Angeles, and it’s aiming for high end art show, versus pop culture con.
Like the Lake Como Art Festival in Italy, this event will have limited tickets available, meaning the attendees will have more time to interact with artists as well as purchase art. Those attendees? They include Nick Dragotta, Daniel Warren Johnson, Ryan Ottley, Frank Cho, Sanford Greene, David Mack, Dustin Nguyễn, and many more.
Not only that, but Alex Ross has hand-painted the Angel, the symbol of the hotel, which will be reprinted as a limited edition print in select ticket packages.
Passes start at $75 for Sunday, and go up to $375 for the VIP pass. ICON Festival will be held November 7 and 8 in LA.
Oni Press Honors Mike Wieringo At Baltimore Comic Con:
Keeping the con theme going, Oni Press will honor late artist Mike Wieringo at this year’s Baltimore Comic Con.
Home of the Ringo Awards, named after the artist who passed away in 2007, Oni will release the first-ever Ringo Awards variant of a comic book cover. In this case, a new cover for Archie #1 featuring Wieringo’s 2007 character redesign for Archie and Jughead.
The artwork appears courtesy of the Wieringo family, and will never be sold commercially: it will only be available in gift bags for attendees of the awards.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And it’s con season, baby! Let’s goooo.
