Absolute Batman Tops August Graphic Novel Sales:
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Absolute Batman topped the August 2026 graphic novel sales chart, taking the top slot for Volume 1, and the number two slot for Volume 2.
Per ICv2, DC Comics took 13 slots total on the Top 20, with the Absolute Universe accounting for seven of those slots. DC’s hit Compact Edition line took five other slots, while the main DC K.O. collection popped in at number 14.
As for Marvel, the publisher nabbed three slots on the Top 20… A new Premier Collection of the 2015 Secret Wars came in at number four on the list, with the lead-up Time Runs Out collection at number 10, the Spider-Man: Brand New Day compact comic at number 12, and the fourth volume of Ultimate Spider-Man at number 17.
Image Comics grabbed two slots, for the second volume of Assorted Crisis Events and the third volume of Exquisite Corpses. While Vault Comics hit number nine with the first volume of Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Caroline Cash Releases Surprise Nancy Comic:
Headed to Small Press Expo this weekend in Maryland? Then we have your must-buy item of the convention: writer and artist Caroline Cash has revealed a surprise, full-length Nancy comic book.
Wrote Cash on BlueSky, “SURPRISE!!!!! New self published “NANCY” comic. 24 pages, black and white risograph printed. Will debut at smallpressexpo this weekend! See y’all then! Limited copies so it will not be available online.”
Cash is the current official writer and artist of the ongoing Nancy comic strip, and while the strip has gotten collections over the decades, this seems to be the first time the character has appeared in a full-length comic since at least the 1970s. And as a bonus, the book will feature a cover quote by Olivia Jaimes, the pseudonym for the writer/artist who preceded Cash on the title.
Dark Horse To Release Compact Editions Of Comics:
DC’s Compact Comics continue to be a huge hit in stores, but more than that, a game changer for the entire industry. And in “better late than never” news, Dark Horse Comics will publish its own line of Compact Editions starting in May of 2027.
First off, they’re doing it the right way, i.e. basically aping DC to publish paperbacks in a 5.5 x 8.5″ trim size for $9.99. However, the wrinkle here is that, at least based on the initial slate, they’ll all include two previously collected trade paperbacks per Compact Edition.
That includes the first out of the gate, The Witcher, which will hit on May 27. Black Hammer follows on June 1, then Cyberpunk 2077 on June 29, Canto on July 6, and The Goon on a TBA later date.
Given Dark Horse’s extremely deep bench of titles, it’s an odd mix to launch with… Nothing against any of them in particular, but The Goon seems like a no-brainer, as does Black Hammer. However, the lack of, say, Sin City, Umbrella Academy, Hellboy or even Usagi Yojimbo is a bit surprising, not to mention some of the older, beloved licensed properties; or perhaps Concrete, given the new series is currently hitting stores? Regardless, there’s more to come.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And next year, I’ll be releasing a Compact Edition of this podcast, which comes in a one minute trim size.
