10 Best-Selling Comics September 1-7: Batman’s Bad Seeds Grow Big Sales

Batman #13 crop

You’re never going to believe this: people like that Batman guy. And in fact, Batman #13, continuing DC’s “Bad Seeds” crossover, took the top slot in the single issue sales charts for last week’s comics.

The other entry in the crossover, Batgirl #23, did solidly as well at #14 on the list, boding good things for the crossover in general (we’ll have to see how Gotham Central does on next week’s charts). And that wasn’t the end of the good news for DC Comics: Doom Patrol, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Teen Titans, the three Next Level titles for the week, were all back to back in the Top 5 after the latest issue of Absolute Superman. In total, DC snagged 131 slots on the Top 400, a pretty sizable chunk.

What about Marvel, you say? Daredevil #6 ranked highest at number six, and I’ll point out the continued strength of that title… It seems to be a consistent hit for the House of Ideas. Captain America and Deadpool are also doing well in the Top 10, though Marvel snagged “only” 117 slots on the Top 400.

Of other publishers, Dynamite ranked at number 15 for Ben 10 #5, while Image was right behind it at number 16 for Crowbound #1, the latest collabo between Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen. BOOM! seems to have a solid hit on its hands with Hellraiser Resurrections – New Wounds #1 at number 31, while Bad Idea hit number 29 with Warbird.

Slightly disappointing, Oni Press’s new Archie #1 debuted at number 40, though one wonders if that will build over time as word of mouth has been good. Conversely, Ignition’s Prima Apparata, a dark body horror sci-fi ballet tale (seriously) hit number 46, which is a good debut for something with no real name recognition.

In total, Image got 46 slots, Dynamite 16 slots, BOOM! 14 slots, Oni got 10, and Ignition snagged seven slots. While IDW grabbed 16 slots, the previously released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mirage Facsimile ranked highest, at number 84.

*Sales charts are based on data from Prana Direct Market Solutions, which culls together POS (Point of Sale) data from 600+ comic book stores that use the Manage Comics and Comic Shop Assistant systems. That means direct sales to 80,000+ customers, versus orders from comic book stores. But it also means this is a representative sample, and not complete data nor does it contain actual sales figures. Short version, it’s a good reference point, but actual sales data may vary.
