Hope you haven’t made any plans for 2028 or 2029, because after a light few years the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) will be back to full strength with three releases a year. And not only does that mean Marvel Studios (and Disney) have added a mystery movie to 2029, they’ve also set the 2028 premiere date for Ghost Rider.
…It’s odd they didn’t announce this at San Diego Comic-Con with the announcement of the new Ryan Gosling/Shawn Levy movie, right? Or just this past weekend at the D23 Expo? Anyway, it’s out now thanks to an updated release schedule for Disney theatrical films, so we know that Ghost Rider will hit on July 28, 2028, an appropriately hot month for a hot-headed hero.
Going in order, we’ve got Avengers: Doomsday to look forward to on December 28, 2026. And a year later, the sequel Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027, with no other Marvel movies — surprisingly — coming in the intervening time (though SONY’s Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse will hit on June 18, 2027, so we won’t be devoid of movies entirely).
Then in 2028, the thus far untitled X-Men movie will hit on May 5, 2028 (X-Men: Brand New Day could be good, if you want), followed by Ghost Rider, then Black Panther 3 on December 15, 2028.
2029 is the mystery year, with new releases on May 4 (take that, Star Wars), July 13, and November 9. What could they be? Honestly, no idea, as Marvel hasn’t announced (officially) anything else in development. Unofficially we could get a Fantastic Four sequel, a Shang-Chi sequel, or the rumored Nova movie. There has also been chatter about another Thor or Doctor Strange movie, so any of those are possible as well.
I’d venture they probably want something mutant related there, though. It’s likely too early for an X-Men 2, but that would be the perfect slot for Deadpool 4 (or Deadpool & Wolverine 2, let’s be honest) to keep the Mutant Saga going. And just a note, Spider-Man movies — there assuredly is another Tom Holland outing in the works — goes on SONY’s schedule, not Disney’s. So we could see a new Spider-Man movie in the mix, too.
My best guess? Fantastic Four: Second Steps on May 4 (come on, they won’t be able to resist the “four” of it all), Deadpool 4 on July 13 (likely finding Shawn Levy turning right around to direct that after Ghost Rider), and then one might hope something non-sequel in the November slot, though given Disney’s play-it-safe attitude it’s not too much of a stretch to think a new Thor movie could be in there, instead.
