After debuting huge for HBO and HBO Max, it was a bit of surprise that we didn’t get an immediate Season 2 pickup for IT: Welcome to Derry. Well, worry not, everyone’s favorite killer clown creature is back in action for the just renewed second season of the series, which will send the action back to 1935.

“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming, said via press release. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”

Added Andy and Barbara Muschietti, “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”

Picking up off the twist from the first season that Pennywise (Bill Skårsgard) is living his life backwards, and seemingly heading back in time to kill the descendants of the Losers Club before they can kill him in the events of IT and IT Chapter Two, per PR, “Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.”

Yikes! While Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane co-showran the first season, Kane will be the sole showrunner this time around. HBO touts that, “Since its debut, the series has ranked among the top four series premieres globally in HBO Max history.” At this time, no cast-members have been confirmed, though you can bet Skårsgard will be back… And potentially some of the young cast as well, playing their own ancestors.
