Last night (August 14) at the D23 Expo, Marvel unveiled a new special look at Avengers: Doomsday and the cast of the 2028 debuting as-yet untiled X-Men movie. But for my money the coolest thing thy showed off was the first trailer for VisionQuest.
Ostensibly the conclusion of the TV trilogy started by WandaVision and continuing through Agatha All Along, that’s a little disingenuous because this new series comes from Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys, Picard) while Jac Schaeffer (who wrote WandaVision and showran Agatha) moves into an Executive Producer capacity. So instead “all” we’re getting is Matalas’s signature mind-bending television styles as we journey to the center of Vision’s (Paul Bettany) mind.
And in that mind, in a riff on The Vision series by Tom King and Gabriel Walta which was also used as inspiration for WandaVision, Viz has created a whole staff comprised of “human” versions of AI characters from throughout the MCU. And that includes Vision’s “papa” Ultron (James Spader).
That latter point is what is selling me on the show. While the plot concerns Vision discovering his son, Thomas Shepard (Ruaridh Mollica) has somehow become real after being created by Wanda’s hex back in WandaVision, the real relationship I’m intrigued by is Spader and Bettany. Minority opinion? Spader was great as the robot villain in Age of Ultron, and the chance to see him eat up the scenery on this show with the promise that Ultron won’t stay a docile prisoner of Vision’s mind for long is a thrilling one.

Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.

Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, Terry Matalas, and written by Terry Matalas, Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura. “VisionQuest” is created for television byTerry Matalas, based on the Marvel Comics. The executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos, Terry Matalas, Jac Schaeffer, and Christopher J. Byrne, and the producer is Roopesh Parekh.
