Listen: I don’t like being a hater. It’s no fun. I like liking things! But thus far, everything I’ve seen and heard out of Avengers: Doomsday has left me completely cold, from the six-hour-long livestream of chairs to the “tone poems” released in theaters (they’re not trailers!), to, well, everything about the blockbuster superhero mash-up. That is, up until now. Last night, Marvel showcased a Special Look at Avengers: Doomsday at the D23 Expo — I believe the same one they showed off at San Diego Comic-Con — and I’ll admit: it’s pretty cool.
The two-ish minute look, which you can watch online, shifts the focus from a returning Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) teasing that this is a bigger threat than anything, actually, and you must purchase tickets to see this in the definitely real InfinityVision format, to Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr). And having seen this… I wish they had put this out first? Because not only does the armor look cool, but RDJ sounds pretty great as Doom, and the scenes they include in the Special Look are the sort of geek-out moments you want to see from a spectacle like this. In short, this advertisement did the best job of selling me, a curmudgeon, on the movie of anything over the past two years.
Some moments that almost gave me chills, or at least created a mild stirring in my heart? Doom raising an army of Sentinels with his magic. Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) screaming at Doom, which is such a silly thing but seeing that the movie will center the Doom/Reed rivalry is a relief. And simple things like a close-up of Doom crying in his armor, and he has green eyes.
There are still concerns I have, mind you. There are a lot of shots in this special look of characters just looking concerned/like they’re in a photo shoot for the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday. And despite it being pretty neat to see Doctor Doom and Sentinels, those shots still kind of look like garbage, set in the grey smokey wasteland where everything is set in the MCU.
But for the first time, seeing that they’re centering the movie around the tragedy of Doctor Doom has given me a glimmer of hope that this might somehow end up being a fun, cohesive movie. At the very least, these two-ish minutes of it are pretty, pretty cool.
