Something Is Killing The Children and Terminal Post Big Comic Sales:
Comic books are back, baby! And two recent titles are posting big numbers in comic book stores: Something is Killing the Children and Terminal.
On the latter, writer Robert Kirkman revealed that his new superhero series from Skybound and Image Comics sold 300,000 copies to comic book stores, crediting the blind bag program… Though having Kirkman, Joe Casey and Andy Kubert on the initial issue probably didn’t hurt.
As for Something is Killing the Children, the upcoming 50th issue has reportedly sold a not-too-shabby 250,000 copies to stores. This anniversary issue also has a blind bag program, with the bagged copies including exclusive variant covers as well as a secret surprise that “is going to launch a whole world of things” — though they’ll cost a hefty $14.99 each.
As usual, we’ll note here that these are copies ordered by stores, not sold to customers — yet. So actual sales figures may vary. But still, it’s a sign of a strong comic book market that it isn’t just Absolute Batman selling well… There’s room for more hits on the shelves.
Kickstarter Launched To Help Save Harvey Pekar’s Collected Works:
Harvey Pekar and Joyce Brabner are two of the most iconic indie comic creators of all time. And now their collected works are in danger, and can only be saved by a currently running Kickstarter organized by their adoptive daughter Danielle.
Per Danielle, who is featured in Pekar’s American Splendor, “forty years of their raw, unfiltered creative history is sitting across four massive storage units. With urgent deadlines looming to clear and secure these spaces, I am stepping up independently to physically protect, sort, and digitally archive this legacy before it is lost.”
The goal is to sort through the thousands of documents and catalogue them — and to do so, Danielle is asking for $12,000 by August 18. As of this recording, the Kickstarter is at almost $8,000… So if you want to help preserve a piece of comic book history, go check it out.
Dark Horse Union Rallies For Senior Editors:
Back in June, Dark Horse formally recognized the Dark Horse Union, which was great news at the time. Well, now the Dark Horse Workers United is springing into action with a rally held Monday for Senior Editors.
Specifically, per Graphic Policy, according to the Union, Dark Horse’s management is stating that Senior Editors are management, and therefore ineligible to join the Union. And the Catch-22 is that if they don’t agree with the designation, they’ll receive a pay cut and get demoted.
In response, the Union has organized a cosplay rally to push back on the policy. We’ll have more on this as it develops.
