Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally in theaters, and as usual, you’re probably wondering whether there’s a post credits scene. The answer, because it’s really annoying to drag this out for 1,000 words, is: yes, there is an end credits scene. Just one of them, by the way, and you’ll have to wait all the way to the very end to see what it is.
…Or you could read below, if you’re in the theater now and really need to go to the bathroom, as I’ll attempt to explain exactly what happens in the Brand New Day end credits scene. Though, uh, it’s a little confusing. Or more positively: mysterious! Not Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), by the way, just mysterious.
Okay, enough weird jokes, let’s get to what happens in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day post credits scene. And this should be obvious, but spoilers past this point.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Post Credits Scene Explained… Maybe
In the new movie, we discover that because of Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) amnesia spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) has spent the pretty much every year since high school building a Spider-Tracker app where people can report Spider-Man sightings and chat online. The goal isn’t to do anything nefarious… Ned knows that Spider-Man saved them several times in high school, but doesn’t know why; and merely wants to thank him.
Ned gets the opportunity to tell Spider-Man “thank you,” thanks to a LEGO-fueled hangout session during the movie. And the final moment is Peter introducing himself to Ned, they do their secret handshake, and it sure seems like the spell is broken: Ned remembers Peter. We then get a montage of New York City street scenes, followed by the credits for the movie. So in terms of credit scenes, sure, there are some nice shots of New Yorkers hanging out, but no wild Easter eggs for Marvel fans or anything.
But after the final credit cards for SONY and Pascal Pictures, we do get a short, animated sequence featuring the Spider-Tracker. After several pings of “location unknown,” the app zooms out from New York, then zooms out from Earth, and moves over to an uncharted area of space, with a little avatar of Spider-Man and the voice saying “location found.”
This is followed by white text on black saying “SPIDER-MAN WILL RETURN” but doesn’t specify when or where.
So where is Spider-Man, and when shall he return? The most obvious answer is Avengers: Secret Wars, the 2027 sequel to this year’s Avengers: Doomsday. While we don’t actually know the plot of either movie yet, the popular assumption is that as happens in Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Marvel comic Secret Wars, Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) will “save” the universe from multiversal collapse by coalescing what’s left into a patchwork planet called Battleworld, where he just so happens to be god.
So this Spider-Tracker alert is a tease that Spider-Man is on Battleworld, right? Well, if things play out the way they do in the comic, there is no Earth for a Spider-Tracker to exist on, as the only thing left of the entire multiverse is Battleworld. That’s it, that’s the whole thing.
It’s possible this could be teasing something else, like a space mission for Spider-Man in either Doomsday or Secret Wars. Or it could be an entirely different off-planet adventure for Spider-Man in a Brand New Day sequel… MCU Spider-Man has already gone to space, and there was even a recent arc in the Amazing Spider-Man comic that found him travelling through space with, among other characters, Rocket Raccoon.
Point being: this end credits scene could be a tease for Secret Wars. It could be confusing and contradicted. And/or it can be something entirely different. We’ll know more… Some day.
