DC Announces Vixen, Static and The Demon Series:
You thought DC Comics was done after announcing Michael Walsh on Jonah Hex? You thought wrong, friend. Because thanks to the publisher’s Next Level panel at San Diego Comic-Con, they also announced teams (or individuals) for The Demon, Vixen and Static.
First up is The Demon, which will be written and drawn by James Harren, probably best known for his work on Image Comics Ultramega. Given the horror theme of the book, like Jonah Hex it will debut on October 7. And if you’re curious what it’s about, well… Wait and see, though it’s reportedly inspired by the work of Jack Kirby. That’s not a shocker: Kirby created Etrigan back in 1972.
What about Vixen? That’s fulfilling a long-time dream from writer Stephanie Williams, alongside artist Khary Randolph. Williams said on the panel that, “Two long years. I remember sharing on Threads that I had a Vixen pitch that was burning a hole in my drafts. What if Rihanna decided to be a superhero, but not Tyra Banks?”
And as for Static, who rejoined the DC Universe recently in a one-shot, followed by joining the team over in New Titans, the Milestone character will get his own ongoing from writer Cody Ziglar with art by Diego Olortegui.
There are no debut dates yet for Vixen or Static.
Beneath The Trees To End:
Samantha Strong… No more! As announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Patrick Horvath’s hit IDW series Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees will come to a close with a third and final volume, The Summer and the Fall.
Following up on the devastating events of the sequel Rite of Spring, the series will jump forward a decade to 2004, as, per The Hollywood Reporter, “small-town America has died and the country is seemingly locked into a forever war in the Middle East. Strong, once the most infamous and most wanted person in the country, had faded into obscurity. She’s now in her 60s and attempting to live a quiet life off the grid in the desert. She kills when the opportunity presents itself, but she spends her time surviving. But it’s only a matter of time until she’s recognized.”
Beneath the Trees has been a huge hit for IDW, selling over 400,000 copies and leading to spinoffs like an upcoming Halloween anthology by Horvath and other horror superstars. An Artist’s Edition of the first series is now in stores, and there’s a planned Samantha Strong (the serial killer bear at the heart of the story) plushie, as well. Heck, she even crossed universes, fighting Lex Luthor in DC K.O.: Boss Battle.
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: The Summer and the Fall #1 hits stores in February, 2027.
Mary Jane Spins Off Into Her Own Series:
Mary Jane, Mary Jane. Does whatever a human can. Produces stuff, hangs with friends. But super stuff, it never ends. Look out! As announced at San Diego Comic-Con at Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel, here comes Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane.
…Or less musically, in the wake of the Queen in Black crossover, Mary Jane is out of the Venom suit, and Eddie Brock is back in black. So where does that leave Spider-Man’s sometimes girlfriend? In her own five-issue series by Ashley Allen and Phil Noto.
Per the synopsis, “Mary Jane Watson—model, actress, hero—is taking on a new role: PRODUCER! But when CHAMELEON sets his sights on sabotage, Mary Jane will need to use every tool in her arsenal—including a TOP SECRET gift from Venom—to come out on top.”
What is that “top secret” gift from Venom? Is it a copy of Top Secret on VHS? You’ll just have to read to find out.
Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane #1 hits stores on November 4, 2026.
