Right after the action ends in the Season 3 premiere of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, the screen cuts to black, followed by six simple words in white text: “In loving memory of Rif Hutton.” It’s a bare bones tribute, but an important one because Hutton is one of the most important behind-the-scenes players in the history of the Walking Dead franchise.
Why is that? You’ll probably never guess what the legendary actor did for the show(s) off-hand, so I’ll just tell you: he was one of voices of The Walkers, and one of the only actors to “appear” on every single Walking Dead series. That is until he passed away in April of 2026 at age 73, of brain cancer.
“We just lost Rif Hutton, who holds a unique place in TWDU history, doing walker voices across all the shows, since the pilot,” TWD chief Scott M. Gimple wrote at the time of his passing. “The walkers onset generally do not do their own growls, that comes in later — and Rif was one of the greatest of all time.”
While Hutton was likely better known for his work in recurring roles on Doogie Howser, M.D. and J.A.G., he also had a long career as a voice-over artist, providing background voices for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Angry Birds franchise, How to Train Your Dragon and many more.
Back in May, NCIS paid tribute to Hutton, as he appeared on the show twice. And now, with the premiere of TWD: Dead City Season 3 the first Walking Dead show since his passing, they’re paying tribute as well. So the next time you hear a walker growl or moan, think of Hutton. Rest in peace.
