It’s official: as announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles will return for a fourth season at AMC, now renamed Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned. And it ill come with a new showrunner: Hannah Moscovitch.
“In The Vampire Lestat, Mark, Rolin, Hannah and this extraordinary cast delivered an unforgettable season filled with propulsive storytelling that captivated the passionate and engaged fans of this franchise,” said Dan McDermott, Chief Content Officer of AMC Global Media and President of AMC Studios via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “We can’t wait to continue the journey with Queen of the Damned, one of the most iconic stories in Anne Rice’s mythology, and watch our established and beloved characters confront Akasha with their world, and ours, very much hanging in the balance.”
Moscovitch isn’t coming out of nowhere… She’s been a key member of the writing staff for the previous seasons of the series (fka Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat). And when I interviewed stars Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson for the new season, they would often refer to outgoing showrunner Rolin Jones and Moscovitch as two peas in a pod, as well as noting who she writes the “darkest s**t.” She was also an Executive Producer on The Vampire Lestat, “for which she specifically wrote the “Akasha” and “Gabriella” characters. Her previous credits include the critically acclaimed play Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, for which she received the 2021 Governor General’s Award for English-language drama, and the Crave TV mini-series Little Bird.”
While no cast members have been confirmed for the new season, it will definitely include Sheila Atim, who briefly appeared as Akasha, the original vampire, aka The Queen of the Damned on The Vampire Lestat. Additionally, as previously hinted, this will likely take place semi-concurrently with the season of The Vampire Lestat, as various, er, things are going on in the background while Lestat (Reid) is dealing with his rock tour and love for Louis (Anderson).
A brief teaser provided also gave some indication what to expect: an uprising that leads to the attempted murder and death of most of the men in the world. No big deal.
Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned does not currently have a premiere date.
