SDCC 2026: Marvel Teases Iron Man In Jail, Avengers Vs. Punisher, More Post ‘Armageddon’

In addition to the announcement of Maximum X-Men, Marvel also — get this — announced a bunch about their upcoming Avengers titles at the San Diego Comic-Con Avengers: Armageddon panel, including Iron Man going to jail, the Avengers taking on The Punisher, and much more.

First up, Armageddon writer Chip Zdarsky hyped up the end of the event series, with the battle between Red Hulk, Super Dave Colton, and the Avengers changing how the Marvel Universe thinks about superheroes, while setting up Avengers #1 from Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto in November.

“In AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, we’re about to introduce something huge, that will set the scene for the future of the Marvel Universe,” said Zdarsky via press release provided to Comic Book Club. “I know how that sounds but trust me: it will.”

Certainly it seems like we’re getting another “superheroes are outlawed” thing like in Civil War and in Zdarsky’s own run on Daredevil. But hey, I’ve only been reading comics for several decades, what do I know! In any case, Zdarsky also talked about the current arc of Captain America, which finds him and Doctor Doom in Hell, facing down Mephisto and Red Skull.“Steve Rogers gets the chance to redefine Hell. Easy,” quipped Zdarsky.

And moving over to Avengers, while Zdarsky didn’t talk about the opening arc of the series, the second arc, titled “The Red Line,” comes with a tease of a cracked Punisher skull. “All I’ll say is Frank Castle is fun to write,” Zdarsky added.

Moving to non-Zdarsky titles, Joshua Williamson’s Iron Man run is going bi-monthly after the reveal of the new Citizen V, who “implores Tony’s closest companions to distance themselves from him. With dangerous technology making it out into the wild and his increasingly reckless behavior being scrutinized by the public, Stark ends up behind bars in the hi-tech prison known as The Vault as ‘The Incarcerated Iron Man’ kicks off in December with artist Carmen Carnero.”

“‘The Incarcerated Iron Man’” is the story we’ve been building to since IRON MAN #1,” said Williamson. “Tony has accepted his role as the Marvel Universe’s most dangerous hero and believes the Vault is the safest place for him to be, but that also means he’s locked up with some of his greatest enemies. But it’s a mystery how and why Tony finds himself behind bars. It’s been fun to build on his history and then take Tony in a new and unexpected direction.  This turns the series into a high-stakes thriller.”

Alongside the “Incarcerated Iron Man’ arc, the title will also focus on Iron Man’s allies outside of prison, in alternating issues with different artists, all the way through March of 2027, similar to what Amazing Spider-Man did with a recent, similarly double-shipping run.

“The journey to our epic Iron Man #700 anniversary issue is so big that we had to split the book into two and double ship it,” continues Williamson. “Our amazing series artist Carmen Carnero will handle the even-numbered issues where Tony Stark is in prison. While the odd numbered issues are taken over by the ‘War Machines.’ James “Rhodey” Rhodes puts together a new team of Armored Warriors to help take down Madame Masque, Adam Ware and the new A.I.M. while Tony is locked up. For those issues we’re joined my old partner in crime, Gleb Melnikov! I feel lucky to have two amazing artists on my team during this action-packed story!”
