Shut down San Diego Comic-Con before it officially opens, we already have the biggest announcement of the convention: Scott Pilgrim is back with a brand-new one-shot from creator Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Titled Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott, per Gizmodo the 24-page comic book serves as a prequel to the Scott Pilgrim EX fighting game, which picks up after the comic book series with Scott and Ramona living as a happy couple. That is until the devious Metal Scott arrives, kidnaps Sex Bob-Omb, and forces Scott to team up with some of his greatest enemies.
The comic itself will feature 16 pages of O’Malley written and drawn battles between Scott and Metal Scott, followed by some extras. And if you’re curious how this all ties into the movie version of Scott Pilgrim as well as the — spoilers — animated sequel series on Netflix, well, that’s part of the joke.
“When I was asked to create a minicomic for SCOTT PILGRIM EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications,” said O’Malley via press release. “Only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It’s only a trifle, but returning to Scott’s Toronto really did feel like coming home.”
Here’s the synopsis:
Scott met Ramona. Sparks flew. The two of them had to work together in order to defeat Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes and their nefarious leader, Gideon Gordon Graves. Some other stuff happened in various media formats that may or may not be canon. That’s all in the past. These days, Scott and Ramona are a happy couple, and the Exes have moved on from their unhealthy obsessions. I guess they all got therapy or whatever. Now, after a period of peace, a new threat is about to emerge. Are our heroes ready? Let’s find out!!!
More specifically, the game does serve as a sort of sequel to Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, given O’Malley worked with co-creator BenDavid Grabinski on the story, and Anamanaguchi on the music, both of whom were involved in the anime. That said, you can probably skip from the “final” volume of Scott Pilgrim directly into this Metal Scott one-shot, if you want!
