Alongside a shocking return in the latest episode of X-Men ’97 Season 2, we also got a very odd introduction: X-Corp. Spoilers past this point, but towards the end of “Danger.exe,” before The Watcher shows up and Apocalypse crafts his Horseman of Death, Professor Xavier (Ross Marquand) decides to memorialize the deceased Magneto (Matthew Waterson) by crafting a new iteration of the X-Men on the ruins of Genosha, called X-Corp. This right after he revamps his Westchester school and welcomes new students, so dude is busy. But what the show doesn’t explain is: what is X-Corp?
Great question, and the answer direct from Marvel Comics, where X-Corp was introduced in 2001’s New X-Men Annual #1 by Grant Morrison and Leinil Francis Yu is… Uh, I dunknow.
Hey, that’s not helpful, right? But the issue with things like the X-Corporation is that comic book writers love introducing companies, and then don’t really lay out what they do. Part of that is packing comics full of business meetings and spreadsheets versus superhero fights would be crazy boring. But the other part is that they like to introduce things like this (Morrison also famously introduced Batman Inc, which had a very similar, very sketchy business plan) and then they sort of fade to the background pretty quickly.
But to treat this a little more seriously as if the answer wasn’t just “it’s a large building and they get new costumes” is that X-Corp oddly is not a corporation, but a non-profit humanitarian organization with branches throughout the world, a chance for Xavier and company to expand their search and rescue operations beyond a school in Upstate New York. Think “Mutant Embassies” and you have the general idea.
That said, after Morrison, some other writers figured out different ways of using the moniker that perhaps made a little more sense. Specifically, during the X-Men’s Krakoa era, all mutants moved to a remote island, formed their own society, and marketed drugs that killed disease and extended human life. X-Corp was restarted to specifically market and manage these products and other mutant innovations, with Angel and Monet (aka the two rich X-Men) in charge. So in this iteration, it was (mostly) a pharmaceuticals company.
Back to X-Men ’97, it seems far more likely given the team is wearing the New X-Men costumes that this version of X-Corp is the international outreach/humanitarian organization, versus the morally dicey pharma company iteration. But with three more episodes to go, we’ll see if maybe Professor X starts peddling opioids.
