Yesterday, as part of the lead up to San Diego Comic-Con, Oni Press announced that Archie #1 will run an over-sized 40 pages. 40 pages? That’s it? PATHETIC. Because Oni has just announced that Archie #4, a celebration of 85 years of Archie Comics, will run 48-pages.
Timed out to Archie’s first appearance in December 1941’s Pep Comics #22, the issue will feature the regular team of Ben H. Winters and Fábio Moon, alongside Kelly Sue DeConnick and Leonardo Romero, Ryan North and Derek Charm, Caroline Cash, Dan Parent, Jay Stephens, and more all contributing stories.
Not only that, the issue will include “Pin-ups, puzzles, and a deluxe re-presentation of Archie Andrews’ historic first appearance from Pep Comics #22 … all alongside an instantly iconic slate of covers in honor of Archie’s 85th anniversary with Eisner Award-winning artist Joe Quinones (Batman ‘89, Wednesday Comics) leading the pack!”
“It’s been the honor of a lifetime for the entire Oni Press team to be invited into the Riverdale sandbox alongside our friends at Archie Comics,” said Oni Press Publisher Hunter Gorinson via press release. “Now, we’re teaming up on one of the grandest comic book traditions of all: The anniversary milestone issue … and there’s no one more deserving than the immortal Archie Andrews himself as he officially marks 85 years of stardom! A perfect introduction to the brand-new ongoing Archie series from Ben Winters, Fábio Moon, and Nick Cagnetti – and the launchpad for what’s coming next in 2027 and beyond – this jumbo-sized, 48-page spectacular also features surprise guest appearances from some of the industry’s brightest talents … and comics fans of all stripes are all invited to join in on the party, too!”
Added Winters, “For the super-cool, extra-special 85th anniversary spectacular, I wanted to tell a story that was quintessentially Archie: playful, action-packed, a little ridiculous and a little heartwarming. We’re topping it off with some back-of-the-book features that are a little bit ‘memory lane,’ a little bit ‘road to the future.’”
You can find out more about what to expect when Oni hosts the Archie Comics: 85th Anniversary Celebration at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25th at 11 am PT in Room 7AB.
