My Adventures with Superman Season 3, Episode 6 Recap: “Party Animals”

As with most Superman stories, My Adventures with Superman is all about coming-of-age. It represents growth, evolution and a journey that, on paper, should see Clark Kent (Jack Quaid) be embraced by Earth more and more. As Season 3 of the HBO Max and Adult Swim cartoon progresses, Clark is realizing just how difficult this learning curve can be. To make it worse, he doesn’t have his powers anymore.

This positions Clark away from his Kryptonian heritage and the Kal-El identity. As the near-invulnerable Man of Steel, he was able to defeat Task Force X in Season 1. Season 2 proved a bit trickier, as he had to contend with Brainiac (Michael Emerson) and his long-lost cousin, Kara Zor-El (Kiana Madeira).

Luckily, Clark brought her to the light and helped put her on the righteous path as Supergirl. He has been making giant, meaningful strides along the way. Not just as Kara’s mentor, but as Lois Lane’s (Alice Lee) boyfriend — someone who wants to plot a future with her and start a family. However, Clark anchored all of this on his Superman persona. It’d help him protect his loved ones, Metropolis, and by extension, the world.

Given his experience with his son from the future, Jon/Superboy (Darren Criss), Clark wants to avert any and every disaster. Unfortunately, while saving the future (well, one possible future) and stopping Hank Henshaw (Max Mittelman), Superman got de-powered. Now, Clark feels fallible, enfeebled and like he won’t be, well, the Man of Tomorrow. The very tomorrow he saw Jon go home to.

Clark has been left questioning his destiny and pondering if life will be a fulfilling one. Your classic existential dread for a hero in crisis. As the latest episode, “Party Animals,” unravels, Clark receives the biggest test in this new chapter of life. In so doing, he surmises he may well have to adapt, let go and deal with change, as reluctant as he is. And while he sees that there may be some merit to hanging up the blue suit, red tights and cape, the universe may indeed have a cruel plan in place for him and his inner-circle.

My Adventures with Superman Dents Clark Kent’s Ego (Even More)

Episode 6 focuses on a gala for the press. The Daily Planet’s nominees are the intrepid Lois and Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid). Steve Lombard (Vincent Tong) picks the team up, although Clark has to sit up front. That’s where the non-nominated go. Clark’s ego takes another dent here.

He has been feeling inadequate after draining his powers fighting Cyborg Superman. Apart from not being Superman, he doesn’t even feel worthy as a reporter. While the city thinks Superman is MIA, Clark is shattered knowing the truth. He feels emasculated. Unnecessarily so.

When he gets to the event, his main task becomes babysitting Flip (Azuri Hardy-Jones) and the young interns. Hey, it’s still a huge responsibility, given the amount of trouble these miscreants usually land in. Nonetheless, Clark thinks of this internally as a demotion: one that keeps him distant and a tad envious of Lois as she prances around as a “Superwoman” journalist.

My Adventures with Superman Fuels the Jimmy Olsen and Supergirl Soap Opera

Another crucial sub-plot this season has been Jimmy and Kara’s fizzling romance. They like each other, but they absolutely suck at confessions. Plus, there are these annoying mind games where they try to make each other jealous by finding potential soulmates on apps.

In the present, Jimmy is crushed hearing Kara, aka Metropolis’ most eligible bachelorette, is going without him to the event. Likewise for Kara, who’s fuming when Jimmy brings his date. To Jimmy, it’s a contractual obligation to the The World Organization for Romantic Matchmaking Science (W.O.R.M.S.) organization.

He doesn’t care if it backfires and he gets mutated again by a date gone awry. He thinks Kara has moved on, so it’s time to do the same. Jimmy does get butterflies when he sees how elegant and gorgeous Kara looks. But he loses momentum with her when his date, the regal Princess Maru (Melanie Minichino), shows up.

She’s royalty from Markovia, despite speaking French. Diehard DC fans would know her to be Doctor Poison. But right now, she’s cozying up and seducing a blushing Jimmy before her keynote speech. She’s a good gal here, not a villain. Totally not a villain. Kara doesn’t care about Jimmy’s boyish charm at this point. She’s angry, sad, and, you know, a whole bag of emotions. Classic immature Jimmy.

My Adventures with Superman Proves Heroes Die Hard

Lois seems to be the only one embracing the magic of the night. She laments over Clark’s dismay. But she wants the award to show up the likes of colleague, Cat Grant (Minichino), and rival, Vicki Vale (Andromeda Dunker). Vicki insults her by mentioning how she refused to come to the Gotham Gazette to come work with her.

Vicki even taunts Lois about staying behind with a “deadweight” boyfriend. Thus, Lois wants to embarrass her with the prize that Vicki’s nominated for, too. In fact, Vicki challenges Lois to a bet: whoever gets the biggest scoop on the night is the better reporter.

Lois gets caught up in this petulant game. But while all this soap opera drama unfolds, a heavy security presence lingers. Silver St. Cloud (Minichino, again) hosts the gala and lets Lois know they’re present as Maru’s safety detail. The security detail is suspicious, to say the least. They have installed shady canisters in the building.

Clark and Lois aren’t in the audience, but they’re still smack dab in the middle of this Die Hard homage. Clark goes off to find the interns, who in turn, have located the canisters. When one of the thugs spots the children, Clark tries to protect them, only to be shot. At this juncture, one has to wonder if Clark can be killed. The show isn’t that bold.

But just before this firing incident, he sees an apocalyptic vision filled with doom and gloom. Fire, soot and ash. Bleak brimstone. Maybe it portends death later on. For now, Clark survives. Off-screen, he decks the thug and runs off with the kids. He’s hiding in the closet nursing a bullet wound to the arm. It proves he still embodies Superman’s selfless nature.

Lois, as inquisitive as ever, rummages around upstairs to find Clark and Co., only to be hunted by one of the soldiers, Vulture (Tong). She races around and gets pulled into the closet. When Vulture tries to invade, he gets sprayed in the face. Lois, Clark and the kids do hear Vulture mentioning to keep an eye on the princess. Naturally, Clark thinks it’s a kidnapping in progress.

He radios in to Jimmy to let him know Maru is in trouble. Like clockwork, Maru turns on the audience when she takes the stage. Wow, a real shocker! Who would have seen that coming?!

Maru remixes her Doctor Poison alter ego. Instead of being a terrorist who wants Wonder Woman, the Justice League and the world dead for giggles, she wants to cull a portion of humanity for being harsh to the planet. It’s an environmental mission fans have seen Poison Ivy or Marvel’s Thanos take on over the years: punish mankind to teach them a lesson about being ungrateful.

Her cult hopes to mutate the guests using the gas in the chambers and turn them into animals. Worse, some will be killed. As Maru puts it, this is karma — she is judge, jury and executioner. As the goons infiltrate and spread out, sheer chaos evolves.

Maru wants an eco-revolution against this “disease” at the very mausoleum that stores animal bones. Her primal instinct is to show civilization that they are the bottom of the food chain, having stifled expression, fought wars and just been plain ol’ jerks to each other.

My Adventures of Superman Shows Clark He Has Super Friends Around

Maru dons her gas mask as the mass mutations occur. She doesn’t even care about Jimmy that much; the cause is greater. She lets Kara know that while her Kryptonian physiology won’t see her affected, Supergirl has to choose. More goons are at the city’s dam, ready to poison it. Kara needs to be in two places at once, so she hedges her bets and speeds off.

Granted, Kara thinks Jimmy could stop his mad date, not realizing he’d become a not-so-teenage mutant turtle. That’s right, Maru transforms Jimmy into a tortoise, with most of the crowd being changed, too.

When Supergirl leaves, Bizarro shows up. Earlier, he’s seen as an ice-cream man taking care of kids in the street. Hey, who needs a resume? He probably just got the job or a loan by showing people he’s a chill, nice guy, right? Anyhow, his lack of English aside, he did see giant TV screens touting up Kara being up for a humanitarian prize at the gala. Bizarro’s eyes beamed, clearly inspired by Superman and clamoring to meet his “friend” and role model.

He arrives when Kara departs, donning his own Superman costume. Timing is everything, not so? Little does he know the mayhem occurring on the inside.

Lois and the gang slip into the vents like Bruce Willis’ John McClane would. They skulk around, seeking an exit. But as the gas infects Vulture, he turns into a giant alligator and chases them through the air ducts. Lois, using her physics acumen, smashes the base of the ducts, causing a series of plates to collapse.

Vulture falls through, but so does Lois. While Vulture’s incapacitated, one has to wonder Lois’ fate in the pink mist. Well, she’s mutated into a black cat. She climbs back up, sasses Clark and drops some attitude that Catwoman fans would enjoy. She starts leading the troops to safety.

This is where Clark’s other friends show they’re in a Justice League of their own. Tortoise Jimmy baits Maru in closer using his charisma and smooth talk, all so he could grab her mask and let her breathe in the gas. She turns into a fox, but undeterred, marshals her squad to the helicopter on the rooftop.

Big mistake.

Bizarro is already there, waiting after sussing out the danger. Arms folded and quite pissed, he calls her a “bad dog” before dismantling her crew and tying them up all up. As for Kara, she uses her laser eyes to destroy the canisters at the dam and take down the vagabonds there.

She then flies back to the gala and blows all the gas out the building using her super-breath. Apparently, she somehow calculated that the gas would diffuse to a permissible level and not contaminate the surroundings. Clearly, she’s been watching Bill Nye videos in her downtime.

Supergirl then finds Maru and her posse wrangled up and is left curious as to who did this. Bizarro isn’t around, deploying the art of mysteriously disappearing a la Batman. All of these Super Friends are in lockstep with each other, reiterating that maybe Metropolis doesn’t require a Superman.

My Adventures with Superman Has Major Problems Lingering

As the authorities arrive and begin reversing the mutations, it’s a somewhat happy ending. Maru apologizes to Jimmy. But her narcissistic gloating and belief that Jimmy is entranced by her only serves to push him towards Kara. He finally admits he’s in love with her.

Kara overhears and has an intimate, brutally honest one-on-one with Jimmy. She chides his immaturity and the games played. She didn’t deserve to be put through hoops; all she wanted was the truth. This lack of communication has hurt her dearly. While she wants to be with Jimmy, she isn’t sure of loving someone so selfish.

Meanwhile, Lois gets her award and gives it to Flip, just to show Vicki that she doesn’t need a trophy to legitimize her career. Of course, once Vicki disappears, Lois takes it back. She’s been obsessing over the plaudit and its sense of purpose, so why not? She’s put in all the hard work. Sadly, it makes Clark feel even more futile.

Usually, he’s a messiah. Now, he’s the one who needs saving when in distress. At least, that’s how he mischaracterizes the entire night’s ordeal. Lois comforts him, but he just doesn’t know what or who to be. Or how to feel. Lois rescued the children and Clark, Jimmy stopped Maru, and Supergirl saved the city and gala.

Rudderless and directionless, Clark sounds a bit bratty as he questions not being a savior anymore. But Lois offers compassion and empathy. It’s not easy having everything — your very essence — stripped away from you. But before resolution or an optimistic pep talk can be garnered, Lois, Clark, Jimmy and Kara all fall through some pink portals.

The episode ends on this mind-boggling cliffhanger, leaving viewers hungry for answers. Is this Brainiac’s doing? He was shut down and exorcised in the Fortress of Solitude at the start of Season 3. But is piece of him lingering in the city? Or could it be the Lois Lane variants out there in the Multiverse from previous seasons. The League of Lois Lanes may not like how the heroes tampered with reality and the timeline, after all. Therefore, there could be course-correction and consequences to come.

Speaking of the future, Jon leapt forward to one ruled by a Lex-Brainiac hybrid, so it could be that the villain is trying to eliminate the heroes in the past. Ah, yes, there are so many delightful options that make the remaining four episodes of My Adventures with Superman must-watch TV.

My Adventures With Superman Season 3 Premiere Dates And Episode Guide:

My Adventures With Superman Season 3 will officially premiere Saturday, June 13 at midnight ET/PT on Adult Swim (technically Sunday at Midnight, but whatever), and later that day on HBO Max — meaning Sundays, likely at 3am ET. The season will be 10 episodes long, with one episode dropping per week until the finale.
