A Tale Of Two Butts: Todd McFarlane, J. Scott Campbell Team Up Like Two Little Butt Cheeks For ‘The Scorched’ Cover Collabo

Two men. Two butts. Four butt-cheeks. That’s what you get when legends Todd McFarlane and J. Scott Campbell present their own takes on the same covers, starting with The Scorched #52.

First announced back in 2025, the collaboration between the legendary artists will take the form of a series of covers based on sketches by J. Scott Campbell, inked by either Campbell or McFarlane. And while the resulting She-Spawn portrait is extremely heavy on the butt-shot, it’s also interesting to see what a difference two inkers can make in a drawing. Also: butts.

“Having known Scott since the dawning days of the formation of Image Comics, when he was part of the young group at Jim Lee’s WildStorm, it’s been so cool to first see his Danger Girl comic and now, decades later, see Scott become one of the topflight cover artists in our industry,” said McFarlane via press release. “We’ve been talking about doing a second collaboration since the record-setting Spawn #300. Scott sent me some sketches years ago for those #300 covers and ultimately changed them, but I never forgot those sketches. This book we’re now doing is one example of the hidden gems that the public didn’t get a chance to see from Scott before.”

Added Campbell, “That teenager in me who used to go to the comic book shop every Wednesday to pick up the latest issue of Spider-Man by Todd, and later on Spawn, is pinching himself to be in a timeline where Todd and I are now collaborating on a shared project like this! I’m happy that this sketch of mine, which Todd fell in love with years ago, can finally become a fully realized cover! And not just realized by me, but to be getting both Todd’s and my unique takes on the same rough starting sketch, I think that’s a really unique and exciting treat for the fans!”

To make things a little more complicated, there will be six versions of the cover available, some featuring colors by Sabine Rich, and others a sketch variant with Campbell’s layouts and McFarlane’s inks. They will be on sale starting this Saturday, July 18 at 9 am PT, only through jscottcampbell.com, your number one source for butts on the internet.
